SAP Global Batch Traceability (GBT) is a repository for batch genealogy data (from raw material to finished goods) that supports fast and easy where-used analysis. The analysis can be done top-down and bottom-up across system borders within a company.

SAP GBT is used by many life-science companies but also becomes increasingly interesting for the consumer products industry, e.g. dairy or food production.

In the following video, Christoph Huber discusses with me what is new in GBT 3.0 and how it complements the new SAP Global Track and Trace solution.

1. What’s new in SAP GBT 3.0?

HTML5 Version of the Network Graphic for SAP Global Batch Traceability

By using state-of-the-art HTML5 and JavaScript technology, the frontend plugin used in SAP GBT 1.0 and 2.0 has been replaced.

The key benefits are:

  • User interface with standard web technology
  • Frontend plug-in no longer needed
  • Multi-browser support

This technological improvement does not change the very well received layout of the GBT graphic network UI and its look & feel.

Simplified blocking and deletion using SAP Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)

Data retention management and restricted access to personal data is now supported with the SAP Information Lifecycle Management (SAP ILM) component. According to your defined ILM rules you can now:

  • Block personal data for unauthorized users at the end of the residence time period
  • Destroy data at the end of the retention time period

This ensures a consistent deletion of GBT network data using a top-down approach.

Out-of-the-box Integration with SAP Extended Warehouse Management 9.5 (EWM)

For batch-managed materials in SAP EWM, you can now send handling unit (HU) information directly to SAP GBT in order to drill-down into even more granular traceability data at a logistics unit level.

The key benefits are:

  • Reflection of goods issue, goods receipt, packing, unpacking, repacking, or moving a handling unit
  • Trace handling units from purchasing via production to delivery including repacking events
  • Locate all handling units that are carrying parts of a certain batch
  • Follow single HUs to precisely withdraw/recall the relevant subset of a batch

This level of detail allows you to restrict recalls to specific HUs instead of recalling a complete batch.

2. SAP GBT and the new SAP Cloud Solution SAP Global Track and Trace (GTT)

The exchange of batch and genealogy data within a business network requires a cloud solution where each partner can easily integrate with.

SAP Global Track and Trace complements our digital supply chain on-premise portfolio with cloud-based, multi-tier logistics network capabilities while SAP GBT focuses on batch and handling unit traceability within one company.

In the future, we will be looking at integrating SAP Global Batch Traceability and SAP Global Track and Trace.
