This January 2018, Shayan Raouf will be uprooting his career from Bellevue, Washington to Minneapolis, Minnesota to join the Concur Invoice team as a Software Design Engineer.

Less than a year ago, Shayan graduated from the University of Washington with a computer science degree and one SAP Internship Experience Project (iXp) summer internship under his belt. He decided to return to Concur as an iXp intern for a second summer.

If you’ve worked with Shayan, you know he is not only enjoys coding and meeting new people, but also baking. Before pursuing a career in technology, he used to be a Pastry Chef. Now, he says one of his favorite hobbies is baking pastries for his team at Concur. If you’re lucky, you may find Shayan’s colleagues on the 11th Floor of the Concur HQ in Bellevue gather around his treats on Fridays and sneak one for yourself.

But for now, let’s learn more about Shayan and his experience at Concur:

Q: Where are you from? What are some of your hobbies, interests and passions?

A: Originally from Iran, grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Some of my hobbies include baking pastries for my team at SAP Concur, Arabic literature, designing algorithms and having a laughable attitude while doing it all.

Q: What drives you to be successful in your internship?

A: My manager is a very motivated and energetic person. He’s always excited and ready to design new algorithms, solve new problems and help others where he can. Simply being around that environment is what helped me to be successful in the SAP iXp program.

Q: What are some of your first impressions of the iXp program? What’s your team and the environment of the office like? Is it like what you imagined or different?

A: The first time I completed the SAP iXp program was last year in June of 2016. I wasn’t expecting to get a project that real users were going to use; however, I did. This made it even more exciting. Coming back this year and doing another round of this program was ten times more phenomenal. This is because I was able to take what I learned last year and apply it all this year. Coming back for a second year allowed me to hit the ground running, which felt amazing!

Q: Tell us a bit about your iXp project. What products or services do you support?

A: As a Software Engineer intern on the Expense R&D team I built a service called the MRU-Service. The MRU-Service is a micro-service software that retrieves and updates the most recently used items of a customer. I was not only able to get a deep understanding of my project but I was also able to deploy this project on to our QA environment, available for Concur development teams to use.

Q: What are some of the key learnings you’ve had since joining SAP?

A: That we’re one big family here!

Q: Do you have a favorite quote or saying that inspires you day-to-day?

A: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.”
