In the last year, SAP was working on a project aiming to deliver the first Enterprise Apps for iOS as part of the Apple and SAP Partnership, with the goal to bring the power of SAP in delivering business software to your well-known and easy-to-use Apple mobile devices.
The first applications, as part of this partnership were the SAP Project Companion for Managers and SAP Project Companion for Consultants. The apps enable users to access and track projects, work packages, and person assignments created and maintained in SAP Commercial Project Management for SAP S/4HANA, as well as to create actions and issues for them. They can also display personal data of project team members.
The SAP Project Companion apps, designed for the Professional Services sector, empower project managers and consultants to execute projects in an efficient and collaborative way on their mobile device, by facilitating day-to-day actions, issues and communication and digitalizing paper-based processes, such as issue assignments, requests, and follow-up actions. The comprehensive list of the app capabilities can be found in the Feature Scope Description.
Despite this intuitive user experience, it is important to mention that these are not purely simple iOS mobile applications, but benefit from business logic running on the SAP Cloud Platform, integrated to SAP Commercial Project Management for SAP S/4HANA or SAP S/4HANA Professional Services Cloud.
Customers maintaining their projects in SAP Commercial Project management for SAP S/4HANA can track and manage project execution using SAP Project Companion. The application will take the first 3 levels of Work Breakdown Structure elements and recreates them as work packages within the SAP Project Companion applications without hierarchy, so maintaining project with individual independent flat WBS element (work package) structure.
Person assignments to Work Breakdown Structure elements are replicated as well.
The iOS application was built by utilizing the new SAP Cloud Platform SDK for iOS, which is also generally available and can be accessed from the SAP Cloud Platform SDK for iOS – Developers area . This SDK enables iOS developers to create enterprise-class mobile apps with an intuitive, consumer-grade user experience as demonstrated by the SAP Project Companion for Managers and Consultants. Furthermore, Apple and SAP are working together to create an SAP Academy for iOS which will offer training on development and design and to learn best practices for both iOS and SAP’s platforms and technologies, and even get access to the SDK and its design components.
