Promoting Design Studio 1.x or Lumira 1.x content into Lumira 2 server
Once Lumira 2 has been installed there are limitations to when old content, from both Design Studio 1.x and Lumira 1.x, can be promoted. This blog shares what is supported and will enable you to plan accordingly.
Whilst Design Studio 1.x content will happily run once Lumira 2.x has been installed (though there are some restrictions KBA 2475223) your Lumira 1.x content can only be held in the Repository for your Lumira 1.x clients to retrieve it. Your Lumira 1.x content, once Lumira 2 has been installed, can not be viewed in either the BI Launchpad or in the Central Management Console. This means the use-cases for promoting Lumira 1 content into a Lumira 2 server is limited, but good to know its possible albeit with some restrictions. More on the Lumira 2 update.
Promoting Design Studio 1.x content into a new cluster with Lumira 2
If you have performed a fresh install of the BI Platform with the Lumira 2 server add-on and
- you’d like to use Promotion Management to promote your old Design Studio applications of version 1.x into it
- and Design Studio 1.x BI Platform add-on has not been installed to any machine in the new cluster anytime in the past
then you must install the Design Studio 1.x Add-on (to any machine in the cluster) before installing the Lumira 2 add-on. If you don’t install it beforehand, the BI Platform won’t understand the old Design Studio 1.x application type and the content simply won’t be promoted, It will complain of a missing plug-in. This would then mean you have to convert your old Design Studio 1.x content to Lumira 2.x before you can successfully promote it. More information at KBA 2529186
- The Promotion Job can be run either on the source or the target it makes no difference.
- The source may or may not have Lumira 2 Server add-on installed, it makes no difference.
- The source can be an LCMBIAR file.
If you have installed any Design Studio 1.x BI Platform add-on to any server within the target cluster any time in the past, then you’ll avoid this problem. Your content will promote as expected.
Promoting Lumira 1.x content into a new cluster with Lumira 2
If you have performed a fresh install of the BI Platform with the Lumira 2 server add-on and
- you’d like to use Promotion Management to promote your old Lumira 1.x documents (.lums) into it
- and Lumira 1.x BI Platform add-on has not been installed to any machine in the new cluster
then you must install the Lumira 1.x Add-on (to any machine in the cluster) before installing the Lumira 2 add-on. If you don’t install it beforehand, the BI Platform won’t understand the old Lumira 1.x document type (.lums) and the content simply won’t be promoted, It will complain of a missing plug-in. This would then mean you have to convert your old Lumira 1.x content (.lums) to Lumira 2.x content (.lumx) before you can successfully promote it.
Additionally:
- Either the source needs to be an LCMBIAR file OR the source must be a system that hosts your Lumira 1 content and that same source system has NOT been updated to Lumira 2.
- The BI Platform that you use to run the promotion job must have Lumira 1 installed on it and it must not have Lumira 2 installed on it (as once Lumira 2 is installed, Lumira 1 content is not shown anywhere in the CMC). Typically this will be the same as your source system, which has already got the Lumira 1 content and Lumira 1 server add-on installed so this shouldn’t be a problem. It means you can not run the job on the target system.
These additional requirements are not applicable for Design Studio 1.x content.
Promoting with option ‘Include Application Rights’
If promoting with the option ‘Include Application Rights’ then all the source applications must exist in the target. For example any add-ons (Analysis, Explorer, Design Studio etc.) in the source must exist in the target. If not, the Promotion will fail and the logs will show errors like
Failed to export object with ID = 23 from source system. com.businessobjects.sdk.biar.BIARException$EngineException: The kind 'VISILums' does not exist in the CMS. (FWM 04030
Lumira 1 add-on is not the same add-on as Lumira 2, so if promoting from a server which has Lumira 1 content to a server with Lumira 2 and with the option ‘Include Application Rights’, then Lumira 1 must be present in the target, even if the promotion job has not Lumira 1 content.
To avoid the error, either de-select the option ‘Include Application Rights’ or ensure the target has all the add-on applications that exist in the source.

Enjoy Lumira 2!
Hi Matthew, thanks for the post. We are about to go through the upgrade to Lumira 2 so if this approach works, it will save us a lot of time if we don't have to convert the documents first. Does this get you out of having to convert the Lumira 1.31 documents as well as Design Studio? Also, do you uninstall the Lumira 1x and DesignStudio 1x server add-on after you have promoted everything or do you need to keep both versions on the server? We thought we could NOT have both versions on the server at the same time. Thanks!
Hello Cecelia, Thanks very much for your post. Good questions.
I've updated the introduction to my blog with
Whilst Design Studio 1.x content will happily run once Lumira 2.x has been installed (though there are some restrictions KBA 2475223) your Lumira 1.x content can only be held in the Repository for your Lumira 1.x clients to retrieve it.
So, it doesn't get you out of converting your Lumira documents. though it probably will get you out of converting your Design Studio content (unless those are based off JDBC to HANA).
You need to update your Lumira 1.x content to Lumira 2. Once Lumira 2 is installed only your Lumira 1.x client will be able to see it.
Also, do you uninstall the Lumira 1x and DesignStudio 1x server add-on after you have promoted everything or do you need to keep both versions on the server?
No. Please see More on the Lumira 2 update. You keep both versions installed one you've installed Lumira 2.
We thought we could NOT have both versions on the server at the same time
Well we do support side-by-side server installation of both Design Studio and Lumira, but once you've installed Lumira 2 then your Lumira 1.x content can not be viewed on the server. We don't support the running of either Design Studio 1.x or Lumira 1.x server add-ons on the server. But your Design Studio 1.x content CAN be viewed (with the restriction I mentioned) as the Lumira 2 runs that content in a compatibility mode. So this 'side-by-side' support is quite limited, especially for Lumira as there's no compatibility mode for Lumira 1.x documents, you have to convert them.
For questions on the update please post to the blog and for questions about Promoting old content please post here.
I hope this helps (press like if it does!), Regards, Matthew
Hi Matt,
Should all features from a 1.31 document be available in 2.0?
Previously in 1.31 I could filter an entire story or page via the 'Default Filter Scope' setting within the Story Settings. After having migrated content I no longer seem to have this ability. Applying a filter on a chart only seems to update that chart and neither can I find any settings to update the filter scope. Could you advise please?
Thanks
Hello Matthew (great name!),
The two technologies (Lumira 1 and Lumira 2) are quite different, though they also share many similarities. It means that not all the same features/functions and ways that worked in Lumira 1 will apply for Lumira 2. The KBA 2509882 provides a good overview of the differences. I've referenced this KBA in my Lumira update blog. That blog, also has a few other resources worth checking out. I'd like to keep the questions/replies to each blog focused on the blog content please. It should help others find the right information. Feel free to also ask a new question to the community.
Hope that helps, Matthew
Thanks for coming back to me., I'll take a look at the resources you mention.
Hello Matthew.
We have source server with BO 4.2 SP5 Pach4, Design Studio 1.6 SP3 add-on, Lumira Server 1.9 add-on.
Then we have destination server with BO 4.2 SP5 Patch4, Lumira Server 2.3 SP2 add-on.
I promoted whole content from source system to destination via Promotion Management CLI Tool using three jobs (1st for promoting users and groups, 2nd for dependencies and 3rd for Primary Objects).
Maybe late but I just found your blog https://blogs.sap.com/2017/10/04/promoting-design-studio-1.x-or-lumira-1.x-content-into-lumira-2-server/ where are described possibilities when promotion of DS content is possible.
After I checked all blogs and SAP Notes you mentioned I came to conclusion that we have now just two solutions to move DS content from source to destination system in such product versions:
1st Solution:
2nd Solution:
Please let me know your opinion on this case. I will really appreciate your reply.
Thank you in advance.
Best Regards,
Peter
