“My career at SAP means an opportunity to take on new challenges and responsibilities and to have a strong contribution/impact on existing and new products.”

As part of our #SAPHANACareers series we asked one of our Berlin based Developers about their journey with SAP and what advice they had to give other developers starting out in their careers.

Meet Julia who was born in Russia before moving to Germany in 2002. She studied Software Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Kaiserslautern. She started working for SAP in 2007 as a Software Developer for SAP NetWeaver Business Process Management (BPM) in Walldorf. She’s now a Front-End Software Developer for the Tooling team of SAP HANA in Berlin.

What do you believe are the most important skills for your role?

“As a front-end Software Developer, you need to have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. It is important to understand how our product could satisfy customer needs and make the customer’s daily work easier. It means our software should have the WOW effect and this is a combination of good visualization and valuable functionalities.  Also, it is very significant to have outstanding communication, interpersonal skills and always be hungry for new technologies.”

What does your career at SAP mean to you and how do you define success?

“Positive customer feedback to my work makes me happy and makes me feel successful. I also feel successful when my colleagues appreciate my work.

My career at SAP means an opportunity to take on new challenges and responsibilities and to have a strong contribution/impact on existing and new products.”

What advice would you give to software developers starting out in their careers?

Have fun at work, stay positive and be persistent! If you have it, you will be very motivated to create something new. And don't deny any tasks, although you don't have any idea how you will achieve them at the beginning, you will learn it later. Having a lot of experience in different areas and building a good network are the best prerequisites for a successful career.”
