What is Cloud Foundry?

Cloud Foundry is an open source platform as a service (PaaS). It is an independent, not for profit Linux Foundation project. As per Cloud Foundry “their purpose is to drive global awareness and adoption of the Cloud Foundry open source project and foster a vibrant community of contributors.” Cloud Foundry started as a joint venture with VMware, EMC, and General Electric. Today, Cloud Foundry Foundation consists of 60+ IT and end user organizations. The latest to join the foundation is Microsoft as Gold member.

What is SAP’s role within Cloud Foundry?

SAP is a founding platinum level member of the Cloud Foundry Foundation. Other platinum members of Cloud Foundry Foundation are Google, Pivotal, IBM, SUSE, DELLEMC, VMware & Cisco.

Open source is the guiding principle of the SAP Cloud Platform and SAP is committed to the open standards and open source technologies with the objective to help reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) and total cost of development (TCD) to help accelerate the digital transformation journey of our customers. Offering the Cloud Foundry environment helps grow SAP Cloud Platform's commitment to open standards and open source technologies and provides more options to developers to utilize the richness of our platform (built with enterprises in mind), along with knowledge & capabilities from open source communities & technologies respectively.

SAP is adding great value to Cloud Foundry community by not only offering the Cloud Foundry environment within SAP Cloud Platform, but also making sure its eco-system of enterprise customers and partners play a critical role in leveraging this environment to build next-generation innovative applications.

To support Cloud Foundry, SAP has established a new Cloud Foundry Dojo in Walldorf, Germany. Cloud Foundry Dojo is a dedicated physical space to educate and grow the community. The goal is to drive open source initiatives such as the Cloud Foundry BOSH OpenStack CPI project.

SAP – Cloud Foundry collaboration: A new dawn in the enterprise software space

Today, Cloud Foundry is the de facto standard for the enterprise PaaS. Most of the cloud service providers are leveraging Cloud Foundry in their offerings. With Cloud Foundry, cloud service providers are in a level playing field where they are competing on technical capabilities & business values their products offer. This gives enterprise customers and developers opportunity to channel their energy to build innovative apps rather than focus on the infrastructure or business services needed to drive the innovation. This also helps our customers to innovate faster at lower costs.

Cloud Foundry empowers developers by letting them build new apps leveraging open standards and choice of their language (BYOL) - with community build packs (e.g. PHP, Python, Ruby, Go) etc. This offers more flexibility to developers as they can choose the language of their choice leveraging their existing skills.

SAP Cloud Platform leverages Cloud Foundry as the open source technology to offer multi-cloud deployment scenarios to its customers.  SAP customers can now build new innovative applications leveraging their choice of infrastructure, reducing vendor lock-in, build applications alongside with their other cloud assets and ensure they meet regional regulatory compliance requirements. Please read “Enterprise is the New Black” blog by Bjoern Goerke to understand how SAP uses Cloud Foundry in its solution.
