SAP Cloud Platform Portal is used by many organizations globally to create business sites for employees, customers, and partners.

 

The new web content editing capabilities, introduced in the last quarter, can boost your experience and address key challenges in creating and maintaining these business sites. Here’s a list of some of the benefits we believe you will gain by adopting them.

 

 

1 – Be more productive through teamwork

 

Site creation and maintenance involves different stakeholders. The site admin is responsible for building the required site structure, the content editor is responsible for content editing, and the developer is responsible to enable the admin to build the required site by creating the necessary building blocks.

 

The new release of Cloud Platform Portal provides independent tools for each of the stakeholders, to allow them to complete their tasks end to end:

  1. 1 Site Administrators – can continue working from the Admin Space, building sites using templates and widgets. They can now also add Web Content Widgets to create the site structure in a way that enables team work.

  1. 2. Developers – can continue working from Web IDE to create new site templates and also Web Content Widgets when needed.

 

  1. 3. Web Content Editors – can now use a dedicated tool for web content editing, that allows them to access a site structure that was created by the admin, and to edit the content of any Web Content Widget.

 

 

2 – Create beautiful, mobile-ready sites without coding

 

Web sites are built from a variety of design elements like text, images, and videos. Web sites of today, contain modern design elements, like card designs, carrousels, and more. You can see these design elements in the example of an HR Portal site below. The HR Portal design, is aligned with modern design principles, contains the following design elements or widgets: a menu, a carrousel, a list, cards, blogs, and a video.

 

Site Administrators are now able to build such sites without any coding using Web Content Widgets that are available out-of-the box. To access these widgets, Site Administrators can open the Site Designer of the business site, and select Add Content.  The updated Widget list contains a long list of Web Content Widgets that can easily be added to the business site without coding. All widgets are designed with a mobile-first approach and look beautiful on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

 

Once the site structure is ready, web content editors can edit content using the Web Content Editor tool. To allow web content editors access to this tool, navigate to Services and Tools from the left menu of the Site Designer and select Web Content Editor.  Now generate a URL for the tool and share it.

 

3 –  Move fast and let Web Content Editors update business site independently

 

The new Web Content Editor is a dedicated tool used by web content editors to update site content, publish changes to their web content, and revert these changes if necessary. Using the tool is simple and does not require technical skills thus enabling web content editors to focus on content.

 

To update the site content, web content editors need to access the content editing tool via a predefined URL as explained in the previous section. Note that only Web Content Widgets are editable in the Web Content Editor tool.

 

To update site content, site content editors can select a widget and click on the edit icon at the top of the widget. The widget is then presented in editing mode, allowing web content editors to add or remove components from the content unit, edit text and images, and save the changes.

 

 

After saving the changes, web content editors can publish the changes they made to the web content.

 

4 – Create sites with your own design with minimum development effort

 

While web content editing provides a rich set of out-of-the box widgets enabling you to create beautiful sites without coding, you may still want to create sites with your own unique style. Bringing your own design requires development effort. However, development effort is reduced as creating a new Web Content Widget is easy.

 

To create a new Web Content Widget, developers can create a new Web Content Widget project in Web IDE.

 

As part of the Web Content Widget creation wizard, developers can select from a list of available content snippets, (for example a Testimonial), and then select how to display the content snippet, (for example, a list or as a carousel).

So that the newly created Testimonial List Widget would look like the image below.

The newly created project, already contains the full code of the widget. The developer can now apply any changes, and easily achieve the company design.  After deploying the project to the cloud, the widget becomes available in the Site Designer widget gallery for the site administrator to consume.
