Show Us What You Got: The Intelligent App Challenge Starts Today!

Brought to you by SAP and Google Cloud

Have you heard? On May 15, 2017 at the SAP Global Partner Summit in Orlando, Florida, Sam Yen, SAP chief design officer, and Nan Boden, Google Cloud head of Global Technology Partners, announced the Intelligent App Challenge to encourage innovative application development on SAP HANA, express edition on Google Cloud Platform by our ISV and SI partners.

Starting today Monday June 5, 2017, we are accepting submissions through August 1, 2017. Judges include industry luminaries, experts, developers, pundits, and industry analysts. Winning entries could receive Google Cloud Platform (GCP) credits up to $20,000, tickets to SAP TechEd Las Vegas 2017, and SAPPHIRE NOW 2018. Winners and finalists receive special mention at TechEd.

Entries to the Intelligent App Challenge must be built on GCP with SAP HANA, express edition. Extra consideration will be given to entries who use machine learning tools and capabilities.

Register for the Intelligent App Challenge to get access to and receive notifications for a weekly “how-to” and live office hours.

SETTING UP & USING YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Do I need to pay to use SAP HANA, express edition for the contest?

You will need a credit card before beginning, to confirm that you are not a robot. Your credit card will not be billed until you give permission. Signing up with GCP you get $300 credit. This should be adequate to use SAP HANA, express edition for the duration of the contest.

Where do I get SAP HANA, express edition?

You can find the SAP HANA, express edition in the Google Launcher. The process to do this is very fast and simple making SAP HANA, express edition a few clicks away from executing in the Google Cloud Platform. Follow the tutorial here see how use the Google Launcher and you will have the server-only version of HXE ready.

What’s the biggest instance of SAP HANA, express edition that I can get on GCP?

With SAP HANA, express edition, on Google Cloud Platform, developers can use build and deploy applications in Google Cloud directly.The express edition of SAP HANA comes with a free license allowing a 32 GB memory use limit and community-based support.
Google charges a fee for the infrastructure resources that you use. You receive a $300 credit towards this fee when you sign up.
The machine instance on Google Cloud Platform can range from 13 GB to
80 GB. No matter how much system memory is provisioned, the free license
of the express edition only allows use up to 32 GB. To expand memory use
for SAP HANA, express edition, you can purchase a license from SAP Store
at www.sapstore.com and apply the license key to the instance up to 196 GB. To use 208GB of memory, purchase a full-use license for SAP HANA, platform edition.

What is the supported Operating System?

SUSE Linux.

Can you scale out?

No, scale-up deployment is the only option.

Do you have code samples to show me?

Here is a demo not included in the announcement documented here, using Google Spreadsheets. It works and you are free to borrow the code samples (and improve them into dynamic and more reusable code). Also check out some of the cool stuff on the App Engine to demonstrate how easy it is to integrate SAP and Google.

      Hi Fabio,

      For this contest as you pasted above, it is only open to people affiliated with a US-based office. Since you are independent, I think the answer is no.

      Next time we hope to run an international contest. Please go ahead and register so we can keep you informed. Sorry that we cannot include you this time around.
