SAP provides customers with clear step-by-step guidance for planning and executing their transition project inside the SAP Roadmap Viewer application which I introduced in my earlier blog post. In today’s post, I will focus on the SAP Activate methodology content that supports your project team launching a transition project to SAP S/4HANA and/or BW/4HANA.

SAP provides the most up to date implementation roadmaps for project implementations multiple times throughout the year to maintain industry standards and provide the best implementation path for customer projects – ultimately resulting in customer success. The SAP Roadmap Viewer and SAP Best Practices Explorer equip project teams with the project phase details and accelerators to assist in complex project implementations using agile methodologies.

Last month, SAP published an update to the implementation roadmap for Transition to S/4HANA and published brand new methodology content for Transition to SAP BW/4HANA. The roadmap updates made in this release will allow for more efficient and streamlined project implementations to better serve project teams for successful project go-lives. Let’s now take a closer look at what each of these transition roadmaps offer.

Transition to SAP S/4HANA

SAP released the Transition to SAP S/4HANA implementation roadmap to support customers in their effort to transition their business system(s) into the latest SAP’s ERP offering – SAP S/4HANA. The implementation methodology provides guidance for all three transition scenarios on one easy-to-follow guide. It covers New Implementation, System Conversion, and Landscape Transformation transition scenarios so customers moving their business into SAP S/4HANA have full support during their journey.

The latest updates to the Transition to SAP S/4HANA release improves the provided content in the following areas:

  • Improved alignment of key deliverables with general SAP Activate methodology guidance, especially in the Deploy and Run phases

  • Additional activities and service offerings in the Run phase

  • Guidance for “Organizational Change Management” has been restructured inside the “Solution Adoption” workstream

  • Improved content for UX and Fiori

  • New accelerators and web links

  • Extensive content updates including refresh of the SAP Value Assurance service packages descriptions - specifically the Value Assurance service description and alignment in the methodology have been updated to support customers in their transition to S/4HANA to support transformation goals

  • The integration of the SAP Digital Innovation Lab is also a new feature and allows for increased value with additional resources to complete the project journey through the many resources available for project teams

Transition to SAP BW/4HANA

The new Transition to SAP BW/4HANA Roadmap is geared to enhance the overall implementation process for the various paths a customer can take to transition their SAP BW system to SAP BW/4HANA such as In-Place System Conversion, Remote Conversion or New Implementation.

The business transformation agenda is different from customer to customer. The transition to SAP BW/4HANA roadmap is designed to serve both customers who are in early stages of planning their transition path, as well as customers who are ready to start the transformation to SAP BW/4HANA.

The transition roadmap is designed to address customer expectations not only by providing the guidance to project teams, but also by supporting customers with service offerings that allow for flexibility and that support an agile transformation, no matter if a customer is coming from SAP BW 7.5 powered by SAP HANA or a SAP BW on any database.

The new Transition to SAP BW/4HANA roadmap provides content in the following areas:

  • In-place System Conversion scenario

  • Remote Conversion scenario

  • New Implementation scenario

  • Descriptions of all phases and activities in the transition project

  • Accelerators to guide project teams to a successful business transformation

  • SAP service offerings to support the transition to SAP BW/4HANA

The Transition to SAP BW/4HANA roadmap follows the SAP Activate methodology framework, the same way as the Transition to SAP S/4HANA roadmap. They both use the same phases, activities and tasks, wherever possible to help users work with the content without significant re-learning effort.
