In my last blog 'Productive use of the ByDesign HTML5 UI with 1702' I had announced the availability of all functionality required for typical end users for productive use but also mentioned the remaining limitations. With 1705 we have almost achieved feature completeness now. I am particularly happy to announce that almost all key user functionality is available now as well as flags, tags and favorites.

When should you still consider waiting for 1708 until you switch all users to HTML5?

  • Are you using any customer-specific functionality built with SAP Cloud Application Studio? Partner AddOns are not yet enabled via default in the HTML5 client. Partners need to test their AddOns and if they do not encounter any issues they can request the enablement of their AddOn for productive use via incident.

  • Are you using MashUps? We do not yet support MashUps in HTML5 so if your MashUps are crucial for your business processes please wait until 1708

  • There are a few more remaining limitations which are still listed & updated in case document 2372377, which you can easily find by searching for ‘Limitations in HTML5’ in the integrated SAP Business ByDesign help functionality.

Please also check the documentation on "What's new?" in the Release Information Wiki.

If you run into an issue please report it via an incident. As long as fixing this issue does not pose a risk to destabilizing other parts of the solution we will do this via Hotfix collections. Otherwise issues will be fixed with the next release.

HTML5 Roadmap

With 1708 we intend to complete the HTML5 desktop UI. In particular all functionality, work centers and views developed by our partners shall be available by default for productive use with 1708. We urge all partners to already test their AddOns with the HTML5 client.

Furthermore you can expect improvements to the analytics screens and also the possibility of rendering of text from right to left, which will enable you to translate .

With 1708 we will also introduce an option via company settings to make the HTML5 client the default user interface.

Stay tuned for the new HTML5-based SAP Business ByDesign OnMobile App - we are working hard on making a beta release available with 1711. It shall replace the current SAP Business ByDesign app (iPhone, iPad, Android). HTML5 will be the basis for any new app we will develop in the future.

By the way: even without the HTML5 app you can of course already use HTML5-based ByDesign via your browser of your mobile devices using the standard URL and login. Not optimized for mobile, but if you can live with more scroll bars for the time being it is a nice alternative for the time being if you are on the road.

Legal Disclaimer: none of this is a commitment, it is a statement of intention. Possible future developments are subject to change and may be changed at any time for any reason without notice.

Feedback on the HTML5 client

Again I would like to encourage you to provide us with feedback on the HTML5 user interface. The feedback we have received so far has already helped us improve the usability further. Please do take the time to fill out the survey on HTML5 available in ByDesign. You can access it by clicking on the "Give feedback" symbol in the upper right corner of the HTML5 UI.

How to access the HTML5 client

You can start it by adding html to the client_type parameter of your launch URL. For example, if the URL for your Business ByDesign system is https://my1234567.sapbydesign.com, then you can construct the URL to HTML5 client by adding “/sap/public/byd/runtime?client_type=html”.

The launch URL for starting HTML5 version should look like this: https://my1234567.sapbydesign.com/sap/public/byd/runtime?client_type=html.

To construct the URL for single sign on HTML5 client, add –sso to domain and add “/sap/byd/runtime?client_type=html”.

The launch URL for your SAP Business ByDesign system should then look like this: https://my1234567–sso.sapbydesign.com/sap/byd/runtime?client_type=html.
