The following is a partner blog by Anne Sutanto, Marketing Specialist at IBSolution GmbH

In hospitals, the sterile goods cycle should run like a modern factory. Right now, it often runs more like a small workshop. But replicable processes are key to sustain quality in sterile outcome and in patient treatment. Any failure in the sterilization cycle can lead to infections— in a worst-case scenario, with fatal results.

Braun’s Digital Service Platform

Together with SAP and IBsolution, a German based SAP consultancy, Aesculap, a division of the global operating healthcare company B. Braun Melsungen AG, established a digital service platform, which provides custom-made apps for various tasks in hospitals. So far these tasks have been carried out partly manually, partly in special expert tools. Using intuitive apps , they can now be processed consistently and efficiently. In addition, the hospitals are offered completely new possibilities for data analysis based on SAP BusinessObjects Cloud— intelligent evaluations may open up hitherto hidden contexts in order to further optimize processes and costs.

The Tray Organization Manager app was one of the first to be launched: It enables the person responsible of the central sterile services department to quickly and easily compile packing lists for the operation room strainer. These are available to the medical staff at any time during the instrument reprocessing after surgery in order to guarantee sterile standards.

Improving Safety – Sharing Knowledge – Simplify Work

The solution improves safety and quality in surgeries by tracking every instrument and its usage. This will play a key role in infection prevention and thus will help to save patient and staff lives. Its worldwide potential covers 40.000 users, 15.000.000 instruments, 10.000 hospitals and 150.000 surgeries daily.

It enables staff members of sterile departments to understand the specific requirements and meet sterile standards no matter what social or educational background they have. It provides product descriptions in more than 180 different languages and explains in text and image how medical devices such as endoscopes are correctly disassembled or reassembled.

The apps simplify work and workflows. Using an intuitively user interface, they allow staff and patients to process their tasks a lot faster and easier. The possibility to scan the products enormously eases work for users—to access latest information such as pictures, dissection items or user instructions was inconvenient and complicated before. Now these documents are available anytime and anywhere via mobile apps within seconds.

A Vision Came True with SAP BusinessObjects Cloud

Aesculap is now able to access all data from any device to create highly automated reports based on templates and combined with modern visualization and exploration. Using SAP BusinessObjects Cloud enabled the company to create digital touchpoints, so they know when an instrument needs to be repaired or reordered. This concept of digital twins is a future-oriented topic for Aesculap: all services should be able to be used in the digital world so their daily business is gradually transferred to e-business.

The joint project of Aesculap and IBsolution recently won an SAP HANA Innovation Award.

If you are a visitor to this year's SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG annual conference in Orlando, take the chance to learn more about how B. Braun's Aesculap division developed new business models by offering digital services around its products— both free and paid— and thus evolved from a mere medical device manufacturer to one of the leading digital service providers in the healthcare market.
