A platform provides infrastructure and services to bring different groups of people in a specific context towards common goals in an easy, repeatable and scalable manner. For example, a platform like Ebay or Etsy not only brings buyers and sellers together, but also provides a place where millions of business interactions are made simple. A platform like Lyft brings riders and drivers together quickly and makes getting to one’s destination as smooth as possible.
In an era where businesses are differentiating more and more based on software, SAP Cloud Platform offers runtimes and services for this software to develop, deploy and run. Or better, as I said in my previous post intelligently connecting people, businesses and things. Who are the people in this sentence? It is the end users of applications running on the platform, developers who wrote them and operators who run and manage these applications.
Developers varies from IT departments to professional software development organizations. Their concerns are twofold: they want a development flow that helps them rapidly create new applications or extend existing apps in a modern, responsive ways for easy end user consumption. In addition, developers want a flexible platform that offers lots of runtimes, and services that include, development, debugging, monitoring and deployments. On the other hand, operators care more about resiliency, scalability and manageability of the solutions.
Unlike the developers and operators, end users aren’t concerned with how the apps are built or how they operate. End users only care about solving their current problems from where they are, like at their desk with a laptop or with their mobile phone in hand. End users could be business customers, suppliers, partners, or employees, but what they all desire is a user experience focused on ease-of-use. With SAP Cloud Platform, developers and operators get access to a variety of language runtimes and have plenty of services at their disposal to accelerate their development requirements and to meet the needs of the end user.
Services like SAP WebIDE, a web based development environment for creating Fiori, JavaScript and SAP HANA based applications or Eclipse for Java development allow for powerful development options. The openness of SAP Cloud Platform also allows developers to use almost any development environment of their choosing. All this translates to powerful capabilities for debugging, monitoring and deploying applications.
With the SAP Build service, developers can work collaboratively with end users to develop prototypes and quickly gather feedback with iterative cycles. It’s an excellent tool to ensure developers produce what the users had in mind all along. End users also enjoy a modern, responsive experience through the SAP Fiori UX.
The SAP Cloud Portal service allows for rapid website creation, while easily integrating with applications like SAP S/4HANA, Successfactors, and Hybris Cloud for Customers. The SAP Jam, SAP Document Center and Gamification service all make it simpler for end users to collaborate and share documents in a fun, gamified manner.
