HowTo… Configure a new HANA search view for MDG-M

Hi,

If you use SAP MDG-M on SAP HANA you hopefully use the HANA search capabilities which gives you a lot of advantages. SAP ships some standard search views which includes a lot of attributes from different tables/MDG entities. Hopefully these standard views are already pretty close to what you need in your implementation project.

In case you want to create your own SAP MDG HANA search view you can go through the official guides (e.g. MDG_Config_BP_90_SP00.pdf).

In addition you will find a simplified explanation in this blog. It explains the needed steps including screenshots. My example creates a very simple and basic search views which includes only some MARA/MATERIAL related attributes and fields and the material description.

Step by Step Guide: Configure a new HANA search view for MDG-M

Goal: Create your own MDG search view for MDG-M.

Version: SAP MDG 9.0

Step 1: Copy a standard search view to your namespace

  1. In SAP GUI start transaction mdg_hdb_gen_ui (or navigate through MDGIMG)
  2. Scroll down to MM MDGM_MM_ORGS and copy this view to ZMDGM_MM_BASIC
  3. Define a Description: This will be the text which appears in the drop down for the search providers in the end user viewend user view:
  4. Click on Next to “Select Entities and Attributes”: Deselect all Entities except attributes on MATERIAL level and BSCDATTXT

Click on NEXT and SAVE and GENERATE

Step 2: (optional) – Verify correct generation

  1. Go to MDG IMG and “Define Search Applications
  2. Select HA line and click on “Allocation of Search…”  on the left hand side.
  3. Scroll down and double check that the new entry exist

Info: The FPM Communicator is implemented in a way that it automatically picks all valid search views. Valid means: define in this customizing view and generated successfully.

Step 3: Test the new search view

  1. Go to NWBC and test the new search
  2. You will find the new view in the drop down
  3. Dependent on the Entities and attributes you selected in former steps the system offers the corresponding attribute search options.
  4. Info: You can influence the sorting of the search methods (if you have multiple MDG HANA Search views created) with description defined in the mdgimg view.

Step 4: Change and extend the new search view to your needs.

  1. Now you can start in Step 1 and change the settings for the selected entities and attributes to your needs.

Hope this blog helps you getting familiar with the SAP MDG HANA search.

Best Regards

Steffen

Info:

Please read as well the official guides because some more details might have to be taken into consideration such as:

  • Filters for OBS:
You must set filters in the SAP HANA staging views to exclude records that have the obsolete indicator set. Identify all the Obsolete Indicator flags. The fields corresponding to the obsolete indicator flags in each table of a staging view have the technical naming convention USMD*_OBS_* or USMD*_O_*. Select the obsolete indicator in the Details section of the staging view, right click and select Apply Filter. In the Operator field select Not Equal and in the Value field enter X.
  • For material search you must set filters in the SAP HANA views for the material-related long texts stored in the database table MDGHDB_LONGTEXT.
  • more in the official guides

BTW: Thanks to Stefan Geiselhart for helping creating this blog.

      Hi Steffen,

I noticed that some of the data model attributes can not be selected and included in the view during the “Select Entities and Attributes” step (step 1, point 4 of this guide).

Do you have an idea why?

      BR,

      Riccardo

      Hi,

i have not experienced this yet. Are these special fields? Have you selected to entity itself?

      Hi Riccardo,

It is already late but i thought of just answering, may be you already got the fix.

For custom fields you have to maintain the mapping for HANA searc then these fields will be open for selection.

      IMG path:

MDGIMG-->General Settings-->Data Quality and Search-->Search and Duplicate Check-->Define Joins and Field Mapping for Reuse Tables.

      Best regards,

      Hi Steffen,

      Very Informative Blog.Thanks for sharing

As mentioned by Ricardo, custom data model attributes can not be selected and included in the view during the “Select Entities and Attributes” step.

I have added some custom attributes in BP_CUSGEN entity and those attributes cannot be selected as per the below screenshot.

Could you please let us know how can we enabled and select these custom fields.

      Thanks

      Hi Prateek,

can you provide some more details of the fields? - Data type, domain etc. would be helpful.

I understand you have extended the BP_CUSGEN entity in the MDG datamodel with the fields shown above, correct?

Did you have the chance to checkout the reuse attribute view in your HANA Studio development perspective?

      Best regards,

      Stefan

      Hello Steffen,

I am also facing the same issue as Prateek has.

BP_CUSGEN has few custom fields but the custom fields are displayed but cannot select as the check box is  disabled. Could you please tell me how to check reuse attribute view?

      Thanks in advance

      Varun

      Hello Stefan,

      Thanks for the blog.

I am trying to add custom fields into BP_CUSGEN entity and use these fields as part of HANA search in NWBC. Below are the steps I followed.

      1. Standard search views are copied into custom search view.
      2. Edited custom search view.
      3. Field mappings for custom field are maintained in  'Define mappings and field mapping for reuse tables' option in MDGIMG.
      4. Custom field 'ZZCUSFU' customer function (added in BP_CUSGEN) is the 'Z" field for which field mapping is maintained.
      5. Now this field is available (Check box is enabled) to include in search view.
      6. Check box is checked for 'ZZCUSFU' z field, clicked on next.
      7. Click on Save and regenerate button.
      8. View is regenerated successfully.

But problem is, This custom field is not avaiable as a search attribute in NWBC HANA search options. I cannot search based on this new field.

Details of Z field ZZCUSFU => Data element and domain 'PARVW' (Customer function)

Am I missing something here? Are there any extra settings or customizing to be done?

      Please help.!

      Regards,

      Satish Gaddi

      Hello Stefen

      Thanks for nice blog!

We are using MDG-M on S4 HANA. There is SAP delivered HANA view MDGM_MM_ORGS whose status is made as marked for delete by mistake.

Is it possible to unmark deletion status? if yes how?

This error is described in Note 2835581. The solution is: "Delete the entry from MDGIMG-> General Setting=>Technical setting for master data=> Define MDG landscape profile and retest the system behavior."

While same is not available in NWBC in Search Method drop down.

Thanks in advance for all pointers here.
