S/4HANA comes with a large set of new SAPUI5 applications. But there is still significant functionality that requires to use classical SAP GUI and Web Dynpro ABAP applications.

In the past SAP GUI and Web Dynpro ABAP have already undergone several iterations of design improvements. There was the colorful and still wide spread Signature/Tradeshow theme and later the distraction-less but bit to grey Corbu theme has been added. For Fiori 1.0 there is a Blue Crystal theme that uses the same colors like the SAPUI5 theme as well.

But still the look and feel of SAP GUI and Web Dynpro ABAP applications was very different to SAPUI5 based Fiori applications. Therefore things users have learned from using the new SAPUI5 based applications, such as the placement of buttons or usage of icons, couldn't be applied to the classical applications.

Fiori 2.0 - now introduced with SAP S/4HANA 1610 on-premise / 1608 Cloud Edition - comes with the new "Belize" theme for all applications.

Our goal for the "Belize" implementation was to minimize the disruption between the different UI technologies by bringing SAP GUI and Web Dynpro closer to Fiori. We applied as much as possible of the Fiori visual design, e.g. colors, sizes, button placement, icons,... , to the two classical technologies.

The result is a fresh and harmonized look for all applications. We like the new design and we hope you like it as well.

Your custom applications will automatically benefit from the new design by just adding them to your SAP Fiori launchpad.

However, some adaptations in your applications might be necessary to work with the new design. Of course, we made sure that the application logic isn't affected by the new design.

You're welcome to watch my SAP TechEd lecture UX122: SAP Fiori UX for SAP S/4HANA: How This Affects Your Applications in SAP GUI to get more details about "Belize" for SAP GUI for HTML and Web Dynpro. You will also see a demo on how to adapt the UI of a custom application to the new theme.

We are still looking into further ways to improve the appearance for the classic UIs. Your feedback is very appreciated.

I would also recommend to read through the further links provided in the SAP Fiori 2.0 Administration and Developer Guide (chapter 6). Additionally there is a blog that gives an overview about your custom SAP GUI or Web Dynpro ABAP application can be integrated into the SAP Fiori launchpad (#S4HANA 1610 use case series: 5b SAP Fiori 2.0 (tech view)) which you might also find useful.
