What is SAP Geographical Enablement Framework?

SAP Geographical Enablement Framework (in short SAP Geo Framework) works as the foundation to extend business data with geometric attributes for SAP Business Suite or S4/HANA applications. As a framework leveraging the spatial capabilities inherent in SAP HANA, it enables organizations to develop geospatially enriched business data, and make them accessible from within SAP applications as well as external GIS (Geographical Information System) systems. The framework is being delivered with a stand-alone Geometry Explorer, Geometry Editor, and a template for the Business Partner business object as an example for spatially enabling other business objects.

  • The framework provides a map based UI that can be embedded in SAP Business Suite or S/4HANA applications using this framework to quickly geo-enable their business objects and support geospatial processes.
  • The framework provides a standalone web-based Geometry Explorer. It allows the end user to view both business data from geo-enabled functions and data from Enterprise GIS systems on the same map to obtain better insights. It also allows customer to configure access to multiple  functions directly from the map to improve efficiency.
  • The framework provides a standalone web-based Geometry Editor. It allows the end user to search, view, and update geometry for any geo-enabled SAP business object.
  • The framework provides comprehensive customization that allows geo-enablement of any SAP business object and features such as adjusting map UIs for different user group and scenarios, configuring application launching functionality from the map, and setting up external GIS connections.
  • Framework that exposes the geometries and attributes of geo-enabled SAP business objects as feature layers to be consumed through standard GIS tools.

The key benefits of using the framework are:

  • Extend the value of your existing enterprise GIS data into a SAP business process context
  • Spatially enable your SAP Business Suite or S/4HANA solution
  • Contextualized understanding of location and spatial relationships of SAP objects
  • Streamline operations with easy and intuitive navigation via maps
  • Increase the quality, integrity, and spatial accuracy of business data
  • Eliminates the need for costly, time-intensive data reconciliation efforts
  • Better and faster decision making, greater efficiency, and increased employee performance

Thanks for the blog. It is very good. Question – If a customer already has ArcGIS, wouldn’t they prefer using a Geo Spatial solution from ArcGIS?

What is the value add of SAP Geo Framework for SAP EAM over Arc GIS?

Also does SAP have any tool to synchronize Asset data between GIS and SAP S/4HANA EAM?

      Hi Mam,

I’m Working as a GIS Analyst, I have read your blogs, It really helps me to understand SAP and GEF I have to include my maps(Which is in SAP HANA Database) into GEF Environment. Since I’m new to SAP I’m Struggling a lot, looking for help and Suggestions on Adding Geoserver based WMS / WFS Services into GEF Environment as business/base map layers. else looking for possible alternatives, at present cant buy the ArcGIS Server license because it too costly in India. Thank you and

      Hi Gobinath,

and welcome to SAP Geographical Enablement Framework. This page explains its main advantages.

The Geometry Editor is where you would add new geometry lines/points/polygons. First, you need to identify a business object.

The screen shot above is the main entrance of Geo Editor. In the dropdown combo box, you have set a list of searchable business objects. The search term filters.

Once configured, the user would enter a search term, for example 'Nick'. Then select from the results and then it will navigate you to the editor.

Please read the administration guide on how to setup and configure the application.

      Thanks Nick.
