The British outsourcing company services government functions from aviation and military weapons to call centers and schools. Over time, Serco found that the nature of its work created an environment of high-volume sensitive data and strict compliance with the government’s data protection regulations. For the business, this called for not just high-performing IT operations, but also the need to overcome considerable complexity.
“We need a huge amount of computing power for financial consolidation. [At the time,] our solution was way too slow and cumbersome, and we were struggling to produce a consolidated monthly set of accounts on time,” states John Lockett, Group CIO of Serco Group.
As part of its Global Finance Transformation initiative, Serco decided to move its planning and consolidation application to the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service. After just 10 weeks, the test delivered the answers that Serco was hoping for. It showed that, on average, the cloud would deliver a three- to four-fold increase in the speed of consolidation processes.
All the group’s consolidation now runs on a single system that is integrated with the other SAP products the company uses. This has enabled Serco to cut operating and maintenance costs for the servers it had been using. As a result, Serco has consolidated figures on time and can carry out financial reporting in real time
But this is not where Serco’s story ends. In fact, there is another strategic advantage that took the company by surprise. “SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud helps us drive innovation,” explains Lockett. “We can build technology platforms more quickly and distribute them from the cloud. This is a very exciting proposition for our customers.”
