Reimagine the student & academic staff experience with Fiori

Personalise and simplify the user experience (UX) for SAP Student Lifecycle Management and it's key campus stakeholders like students, professors, academic advisors, staff, etc. Using modern UX design principles, SAP Fiori delivers a role-based, consumer-grade user experience across multiple lines of 'academic' business tasks, academic services, and devices. Use SAP Fiori apps directly connected to your SAP (S/4) HANA Student Lifecycle Management environment either in a private cloud or on-premise and enable your users with SAP Fiori apps. Please note: the SLcM Fiori apps can be applied and used also in a non-(S/4) HANA environment.

Fiori apps for SAP Student Lifecycle Management designs are based on direct SLcM customer input (inc. students & staff) mainly driven and support by Design Thinking engagements. Based on this critical important customer/consumer input we designed the Fiori apps based on five key principles that combined deliver a deeply satisfying user experience:

  • Role-based - Deliver the right information at the right time via multi-faceted user interfaces (e.g. picture below with a student role app)
  • Adaptive - Get instant, relevant insight – whether using mobile apps or a desktop computer
  • Simple - Zero in on the most important tasks, functions, and activities for your students and staff
  • Coherent - Deliver a consistent UX across the university – whether it is about course registration, grading students or review latest KPIs, or manage workflow items or leave requests (as HR example for academic staff)
  • Delightful - Enrich your work experience with intuitive, easy-to-use SAP Fiori apps

Fiori can provide your end-users like students, academic staff, etc a modern, mobilized, user experience. SAP Fiori is in it's nature a modern UX that encompasses visual design, information architecture, and interaction patterns:

  • Visual design - Experience modern, visually pleasing aesthetics with a strong focus on ease of use
  • Information architecture - Give academic staff users ready access to the information they need to complete their tasks (e.g. below the academic advisor app with key advisees data).
  • Interaction patterns - Harness simple and intuitive interactive patterns to boost productivity university-wide

SAP Fiori apps

SAP Fiori apps provide a consumer-grade user experience for the most commonly-used scenarios in SAP software which include key services from SAP Student Lifecycle Management as well as other SAP solutions like HR, Project management, etc.Hundreds of SAP Fiori apps are already available across different product and solution lines covering a wide range from analytical to transactional tasks. You can start to explore all of the available apps via the: Fiori Apps Library (for SAP Student Lifecycle Management apps you will need to search via Industry: Higher Education & Research. Once you are there please search on the roles: student, academic advisor, faculty and professor).

Below a quick overview on the current available Fiori apps for SAP Student Lifecycle Management:

Fiori Launchpad

To make your selection of Fiori apps available for your end users/roles SAP provides the so called Fiori Launchpad. The Fiori Launchpad is a role based, personalized UI client that enables users to access SAP Fiori apps side by side with established UIs. The launchpad is based on SAPUI5 and as such can be used on multiple devices leveraging the responsive design paradigm and deployed on multiple platforms (e.g. SAP NetWeaver Application Server (ABAP Stack), SAP Enterprise Portal, SAP HANA Cloud Platform). The SAP Fiori launchpad comes with predefined content to streamline implementation processes and has standard personalization options for your end-users.

The SAP Fiori launchpad is aligned with the key SAP UI clients/portal you might already make use of in your university SAP environment:

  • SAP Enterprise Portal
  • SAP NetWeaver Business Client
  • SAP HANA Cloud Portal

Alignment with the SAP Enterprise Portal is achieved by running the Fiori launchpad user experience within the SAP Enterprise Portal (a.k.a Fiori framework page) while leveraging established portal infrastructure and best practices. The HANA Cloud Portal provides standard Fiori launchpad site templates. With the launchpad configuration cockpit you create new and maintain existing content for SAP Fiori Launchpads delivered via the HANA Cloud Portal. Alignment of SAP Business Client for Desktop (NWBC) with SAP Fiori launchpad design is planned for future releases however it is already possible to present the Fiori Launchpad and/or Fiori apps individually in the NWBC client.

Below an example of a Fiori workflow inbox app available in the Netweaver Business Client 6.0 (also other Fiori apps like the Student File can be called and presented in the NWBC client):

The SAP Fiori launchpad can be visually adapted and customized using the UI Theme Designer to your university look and feel, logo, etc (below an example of a custom theme made available for end-users to choose and apply in their personal environment). The Fiori Launchpad is designed according to the simple and intuitive SAP Fiori user experience, while supporting established UI technologies (such as Web Dynpro ABAP and SAP GUI for HTML/Screen Personas).

As you can see in the below Launchpad and screen examples from our demo system you can embed existing SAP SLcM webdynpro services as well as SAP GUI for HTML (flavored to Fiori look and feel) into the Launchpad. It will give your end-users a consistent look and feel with a wide range of apps, services, transactions, weblinks, etc accessable via the Fiori Launchpad. All via their browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome etc).

Launchpad has mix of Fiori, Screen Personas/SAP GUI for HTML and Webdynpro services available.

With the already rich portfolio of existing webdynpro self-services and the available Fiori applications for students as well as the recent delivered Ui5 based applications for Admission & My Request you are able to build up a great self-service environment for your students with the most-used, frequently touched services being available on mobile devices (a.k.a. the Fiori apps).

SAP Fiori is included with your underlying SAP software license so you can start as-of-today with trying them out in your SAP (Student Lifecycle Management) environment. You can read more on what you need to do to get them up-and-running via the following webpage: System requirements for Fiori. Please also consult the individual apps and their installation requirements via the SAP Fiori Library to ensure you are fully informed which levels you need to be on both Business Suite, Gateway, etc.

A great example of a university who adopted the SAP Student Lifecycle Management apps is Istanbul Kültür University. They went live with Student Administrative and Academic Services Using SAP Fiori. Read more via this Success Story

Let me know if you would like to learn more on the Fiori apps for Student Lifecycle Management and related topics around the Fiori Launchpad, latest webdynpro themes, Screen Personas, etc. Also please share on your experiences what you have done in your university with SAP Fiori apps.
