Mostly a repeat of the what and when that has been talked about in different blogs, and thus not particularly interesting.
I am still not hearing an actual why, other then a couple of tech buzz words. "Because we want 1dx" is not much of an explanation.
Well, this is one hardcore IT guy interviewing another hardcore IT guy, so buzzwords are to be expected. 🙂
As to "why" - isn't the answer obvious that Jive platform needs to go away? Surely everyone who ever dealt with an SAP rollout must be familiar with the situation. "Aaaah, why are you replacing our wonderful mainframe system with this piece of German junk??!!!". Uhm, mostly because the "wonderful" system is out of support, hardware is dying and we can't make use of many modern technologies like, you know, emailing invoices to the customers. Same here: for us, the SCN users, wonderful SCN works fine but I guess the SCN team sees a different picture on their side.
It's not that I like 1DX and mere idea of merging SCN with the rest of SAP (and SAP marketing taking over our beloved community) gives me the hibbie jibbies. I can understand everyone's frustration. But SCN platform outlived itself and it's simply time to move on. I'm not sure why there is urgency but there could be some licensing issue or what's not (maybe SCN team could speak more to that). But again, it's not something unusual in the IT world.
On a bright side - the SCN team will no longer be able to blame Jive for any shortcomings. This time they made a choice of platform, so it better not be Jive 2.
Now these are clear reasons, that I think also work for the less technically inclined, as it is simple common sense. It is something like this that I would love to hear from the dev team.
However it only explains why to ditch the Jive platform. I am still not sure why 1dx? What does 1dx add to the SCN?
With you on this.
Forgive me, but that is just as good an explanation as "Because we want 1dx"
How and why did it outlive itself?
"SCN platform" = Jive, so I'm not sure why this is a question... According to the SCN team, Jive platform did not suit their needs well and did not allow to do things the SCN community and SAP wanted to do. It was pain in the back even for SDN and I don't really know why SAP didn't ditch it back in 2012 migration.
On 1DX you might want to read the post that started it all, I think it explains the :why" part: Future of Community and One Digital Experience
Of course, we (myself included) were very happy to see Jive ago. But I guess in our wildest dreams we could not imagine we'd get SCN Alpha Beta that is missing basic features that worked fine in darn Jive.
P.S. Oliver posted a blog today, see if it answers some of the questions: Future of Community and One Digital Experience
Hi Johan,
Why not Jive anymore? here are 10 good reasons:
of course you can argue that what we are going to launch this weekend still lacks certain features and isn't as good as what we have currently in some areas. But stagnation is lethal and we had to put ourself into a position where we can innovate again and push this community forward.
hope that explains it a bit.
Thank you Oliver, this is exactly the kind of explanation that I have missed so far.
irt #6 - let's just mention APIs for one great example that the community will love!
Any chance to upload a non-Flash Player version of the talk?
It looks like all the replays use Flash. Here is the original: Inside Look: New SAP Community powered by SAP HANA Cloud Platform | SAP TechEd Online</title></head><bod…
Must watch - some major "video-bombing" by Moya Watson and Susan Keohan. 🙂
... only because we love and respect Oliver and Matthias SO MUCH!
@Jelena: thank you, unfortunately the original also requires Flash player.
I keep a VM with Flash installed - for the very rare cases, when I need it, so I have options 🙂 .
Flash is not supported everywhere.
If this site is aiming to become mobile-friendly in a few days, a good starting point can be to use formats, which can be played on any laptop, tablet or smartphone.
Maybe the Facebook URL will work for you? https://www.facebook.com/sapcommunitynetwork/videos/10153831332936016/
Yes it works, thank you, Facebook handles these matters better.
Can we expect that with the new mobile-friendly site, SAP would start to move away from Flash-based content?
I am asking mainly because in the future using Flash player will become a greater challenge.
I hear you! From what I know the whole SAP TechEd Live program is disjunct from 1DX and SAP Community so ... maybe Idit Herzog can chime in here?
