On Wednesday, August 31st, we at SAP announced a new product for data warehousing –
BW/4HANA. This product is the result of over a year of strategy development and represents the first in a series of steps that will make SAP the vanguard vendor in data warehousing. The more observant will have noticed that we also talked about
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) and Amazon Web Services in the
press release. And if you weren’t one of the observant ones (tut-tut) here is an article from Mike Wheatley of SiliconANGLE that will get you up to speed with the
announcement.
At the opening event for the SAP Center in San Jose, home of the San Jose Sharks, Bill McDermott announced that SAP would “skate to where the puck is going to be”, and that the Cloud would be central to SAP’s future. BW/4HANA is part of that future. On the first day of its release (September 7th, 2016) it will be available on HEC and AWS, and other Cloud support will follow.
On stage at the launch event is Diego Lombardini from Fairfax Media in Australia. Diego is already developing a reputation as a character (when asked for a bio for his introduction he responded with “A random guy from Australia”). Diego was an early advocate of BW/4HANA and AWS – he upgraded his AWS footprint from 244G to 2T in an hour, then took a six month project and finished it in three months using the BW/4HANA object set. Watch out for him at TechEd as well (he will be the “random Australian guy”, and if he is reading this, I’m buying him a beer).
The advantages of developing and deploying on the Cloud both cost, and agility – if you have a new data warehouse project you could do worse than spinning up an instance of BW/4HANA’s trial and seeing if the performance, ease of use, and low startup cost work for you.
