Simplified Download for SUM Procedure
This blog explains the simplified procedure that will no longer require to download and mount DVDs. It is available for dedicated SUM scenarios.
Overview
The Software Update Manager (SUM) is the tool for updating, upgrading, or converting SAP systems [Software Update Manager (SUM): introducing the tool for software maintenance]. During a system upgrade or a conversion to SAP S/4HANA, the tool asks for DVDs that have to be mounted on the host on which the tool is executed. Sometimes it is a sophisticated task to find the proper DVDs. The new approach will instead put the software archives (from the DVD packages) into the download folder prior to starting the SUM tool, so that you do not have to wonder which DVDs to download and mount.
New Approach
You are planning a system conversion to SAP S/4HANA in the Maintenance Planner [Maintenance Planner]. As a result, the Maintenance Planner will provide the stack.xml to be downloaded, and it will put required software archives to the download basket, including the software that was previously part of the DVDs.
Note that this approach is available for the scenario of a system conversion with target SAP S/4HANA on premise. Further scenarios will follow (also for scenarios for the SAP Business Suite), but existing scenarios will not be switched.
Note
- Some database relevant files (for example ORAClient, HDBClient) needs to be downloaded separately as done before
- You will have to consider the share for the software archives to be appropriate for the additional amount of data

Hi Avinash,
the section above the figure shall explain this - let me know if this section needs an update, and which part is ambiguous.
Thanks and regards, Boris
Hello Dr. Boris,
We are running SAP DMO and migrating to ERP 6.0 Ehp8 currently.
Its getting DVD inputs on DMO, shall we download the Export Upgrade DVD for source DB i.e. Oracle or target DVDs of HANA.
I understand shadow is build on source, so I downloaded DVDs of source DB i.e. Oracle.
Please confirm if my understanding is correct.
I refer SAP Note #2292146 - Correct DVD Numbers for SAP ERP 6.0 EHP8 Upgrade Export, SUM Error : DVD "BS2016_SP01_MID" Required
It should be placed in DMO screen as well in case consultants don't have to search around. Since in Stack XML should provide the listing as per requirement, which is not the case for DMO stack.
Thank you,
Amit Lal
Hi Amit,
As per the blog the approach is supported for target SAP S/4 HANA on Premise 1511,So you need to download the DVDs as its for EHP8 ERP6
Note that this approach is currently only available for the scenario of a system conversion with target SAP S/4HANA on premise 1511 Service Release 1 (SR 1). Further scenarios will follow (also for scenarios for the SAP Business Suite), but existing scenarios will not be switched
Thanks,
Avinash
