Knowledge fuels Digital Transformation – Digital Transformation revolutionizes Learning

While companies are looking towards transforming digitally to keep up with the pace of their competition, 83% of businesses say that their employees don’t have the skills required to meet the needs of the digital transformation and 73% of business executives do not have the technical skills required. A wave of innovations in big data, cloud, mobile, internet of things, social and machine learning require IT architects and specialists to continuously learn and update their knowledge. In the past, technical skills may not have been required by business leaders but today, technology is at the centre of every business. To define and implement a digital strategy, business leaders must start to gain digital skills to prepare their business for digital transformation.


At SAP, we recognized that the way people learn has changed in recent times. With the evolution of new technical abilities to provide learning in a new way, we’ve researched and developed new methods of learning to help our customers, partners, and employees to get the skills they need to help their business succeed in the digital economy. Since 2013, we’ve established our digital learning platforms to meet a variety of needs for a wide range of roles.


Today, I’m happy to announce that we have just published a whitepaper, Knowledge fuels Digital Transformation – Digital Transformation revolutionizes Learning.


The aim of this paper is to capture and explain how digital transformation has provided technical opportunities for new learning experiences to meet the changing needs of employees who need to learn and stay up to date with the latest knowledge as a result of the digital transformation. Learning is no longer a requirement once every few years; it is an ongoing necessity to succeed and grow in your career.


Skills for Digital Transformation was also a hot topic during SAPPHIRE NOW & ASUG Annual Conference, held on May 17-19, 2016 in Orlando, Florida.


The transition to the Digital Workforce is well underway, yet businesses find themselves faced with a pervasive skills gap. A new global survey by Oxford Economics reveals that key elements of digitization (e.g., increased innovation, technology and the transition to the digital economy) are top of mind for executives and employees, and increasing investment in digital skills is among the primary areas of focus for senior leaders today. But management is not prepared for the realities of these changes: just 41% of senior executives say mid-level managers at their company are ready for digital transformation—and employees are similarly unimpressed by the abilities of those senior executives themselves. SAP and ASUG are teaming up with Stanford University in an innovative new collaboration to address this issue.


During a panel discussion, I was joined by Dr. Karie Willyerd, Workplace Futurist, SAP SuccessFactors; Paul Kurchina, ASUG and Dr. Sabine Remdisch, Visiting researcher, H-STAR Institute at Stanford University. Check out the discussion and gain more insight into this topic.

      Hi Dr. Welz,

      Congratulations! It is a great paper and initiative. Your ideas are inspiring me going back to my studies around Digital Transformation. As a SAP professional I am dedicated to the theme and at the same time trying to understand the impact of all this in macroeconomics, beyond enterprises, as well as in microeconomics. Two things came in my mind after reading your paper:

      1.      How information plays an important role in Digital Transformation. In this case I am talking about the act of being "informed" as a worker and the impact of Digital Transformation in productivity - an almost prohibited word in time of human-centric design. As the great J.C. Licklider said in Man-Computer Symbiosis in 1960(!), “about, 85 per cent of my 'thinking' time was spent into a position to think, to make a decision, to learn something”. Can you imagine the everyday challenge?

      2.     The first observation drives to a second and deeper ❗ one: Robert Gordon in “The Rise and Fall of American Growth” challenges the view that economic growth can or will continue unabated, and he demonstrates that the life-altering scale of innovations between 1870 and 1970 can't be repeated (Amazon). Will Digital Transformation prove Gordon wrong? Are we going to experiment a New Era of economic growth?
