Higher Education and Digital Learning – Increasing the Focus with SAP

Among the myriad of announcements made by SAP at the 28th Annual SAPPHIRE NOW #sapphirenow event was a clear roadmap and plan to assist Universities and Colleges to reshape advanced education.  The focus of SAP is to effectively move the learning model forward globally, by integrating institutions and students through advanced technology to increase real-time interaction and information sharing.  Moving the campus online.

When it comes to teaching and learning, the impact of digital technology goes beyond new platforms for delivering content or making education more personally adaptive our outcomes-based, through are important trends.  SAP envisions a University that is truly “student-centric,” with students increasingly behaving, and be treated as, “consumers,” or even “customers.”

The economic model of Universities is increasingly coming under fire.  Universities and Colleges cannot just continue raising tuition and fees because students want the “university (social) experience” of 4 years. These customers increasing seek real return-on-investment.  And institutions of higher education should understand while they still typically differ from for-profit industries, there are common points in common; and those similarities are only increasing.

Universities must return value to their stakeholders, and must realize that they must manage their operations as would a corporation with a real-time focus on a balance sheet of assets and liabilities, and an integrated financial operating statement, or risk simply going our of business.  Many colleges that have been struggling with costs and tuition scales, and with recruitment and enrollment have increasingly succumbed to this business reality.

While many well branded schools with international reputations and rankings will fair better in this increasingly competitive market, others will look for advantages to adapt and effectively meet the changing needs of their customers.  Digital technology and integrated operations in faculty and student focused environment are likely the vehicles to effectively reshape institutions for survival.  #sapdigital #sapindustries
