SAP Business Objects Suite 4.0: Manipulate & Visualize Data with SAP LUMIRA DESKTOP,(BCO6181, VUT)

We are discussing here SAP BusinessObjects Lumira, a revised version of “SAP Visual Intelligence” by SAP: But while the panel of this sequel is already rich, we can ask how SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is innovative? Why it complements existing BI Suite 4.0 tools?

From our experience, SAP BusinessObjects Lumira builds the stunning visualizations in just a few clicks.  It has an ability to visualize huge amount of data without any hard work. We can combine, enrich, and visualize data for immediate insights. Moreover, we want to share some of the functional and technical features of SAP BusinessObjects Lumira. There are some of the following screen shots of SAP BusinessObjects Lumira screens that we took from our tutorial.

  • Visualization Tool

What better way for a user to feel independent, to be able to conduct its own analysis without the need for special skills and being independent of the IT department? Indeed, the desktop version allows users to create its own analysis. Therefore, there is no need to lose days to obtain relevant visualizations and the creation of analysis is fairly intuitive and fast.

1-    Data Preparation

From the main home screen of LUMIRA DESKTOP, we attached the file from many data sources, then we can create the datasets. The Prepare room allows users to view all the datasets and visualizations saved in the document in the Visualize room. The Prepare panel allows to merge with other data sources (if there is a common criterion between 2 sources), manipulate (create a temporal or geographical hierarchy) or to enrich them (creation of new indicators). SAP BusinessObjects Lumira provides users an ability to customize and analyze the requirements of the business.

2- Reports Visualization & Composing

Further, the document opens in the Visualize room. We can view datasets in the Prepare room, visualizations in the Visualize room, and stories in the Compose room. This panel helps to create the “Visualization” which is to say, reports based on this data set. Again, the creation of these reports is very quick and can be done via drag / drop. The panel graphics available is wide and tends to enrich the tool is still young and subject to regular improvements.

From the visualization screen, we can create Bar Charts, Line Charts, Scatter Plot, Heat Map, Geo bubble Chart and so on. We can modify the colours in charts and use own Palette colours for charts. In the given screenshot we created interactive visualizations of Bar charts, Column Charts, Line Charts & 3D Charts by using the following functionalities.

  • Chart reference lines
  • Conditional Formatting Rule
  • Ranking Filter
  • User Defined Palettes
  • Zoom Enhancements
  • Story Layout Enhancements
  • Story Filter Enhancements

Further, in the following Compose screen, we created a story-telling drag-and-drop interface which quickly create visualisations, storyboards, and infographics.

The data sources supported this tool not only include conventional sources like Excel and CSV format, but it has the ability to connect the Business Objects Universe 3.x and 4.x. A major interest of SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is that it connects to SAP HANA

Creating own analysis, that’s good. The power sharing is better.  In addition to SAP BusinessObjects Lumira DESKTOP Version, SAP Lumira Cloud allows users to enable collaboration with this tool. There are several features of SAP BusinessObjects Lumira CLOUD as follows:

  • The published datasets prepared on the desktop version allow other users to share and manipulate the data by creating their analysis directly in the cloud. Note: that it is possible to manage rights to datasets, so they are editable by other users.
  • We can Import, export and share SAP BusinessObjects Lumira documents, however, we can regret that here, there is the provision of documents (like drop box). Visualizations of these reports
  • Note that SAP BusinessObjects Lumira datasets can also be exported to Explorer.

S5.jpgAlthough this blog is based on the standard edition for individuals (SAP BusinessObjects Lumira Desktop, 1.25), we could realize the potential and convenience to have it within an enterprise as a perfect tool to support decision-making processes. But this is just the first taste of a series of benefits that SAP BusinessObjects Lumira can bring to your business. As you can compare from the other two versions (shown in Figure) the SAP BusinessObjects Lumira Server for BI Platform (LS4BIP) is without a doubt the big winner. This tool enables to anticipate competitor, open a new era of opportunities, products/ services, gain market share, and potentially anticipate customer needs.

SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is a still young tool but there is no doubt that it will be able to find its place among the already wide range of existing tools in the suite SAP Business Objects. This tool stands out because it allows others to respond quickly and easily accommodate user’s needs. Special thanks to our SAP Mentor Tony de Thomasis for the guidance throughout the completion of the ERP Applications subject #bco6181, as well as Paul Hawking for giving us the opportunity to interact with SAP BusinessObjects Lumira and learn more about the potential of this business analytics application.
