The importance of SAP Maintenance

The June 2014 security breach of U.S. Investigations Services Inc. (USIS), the biggest commercial provider of background investigations to the federal US government, exposed personal information of thousands of Government Employees. This resulted in USIS laying off 2,500 staff, losing 2.8 billion in contracts and going bankrupt.


In May 2015 it was revealed the hack most likely exploited an unpatched or zero-day SAP vulnerability in order to gain access to the internal network as outlined in following article: Chinese Breach of U.S. Investigations Services Inc. (USIS) Started with SAP


The lessons from this are:


  • Risk management starts by being up to date on your SAP maintenance
  • Business Systems are highly connected
  • SAP has the tools and best practices to help protect your business
  • Ensure Solution Manager is set-up properly for technical monitoring of all your systems
