Business Analytic Competency Center Guerilla Tactics: Leverage Data Science Interns!
I recently attended Stevens Institute of Technology’s Business Intelligence & Analytics Advisory (BI&A) Board meeting and learned more about its Master of Science in BI & Analytics. The purpose of the advisory board is to provide program feedback as well as to create joint projects with industry which also provide internships for its students. The internship program is a win-win-win all the way around! Companies get access to rare data scientist talent. Students gain real world business case experience across multiple industries. Stevens secures feedback and input on its curricula.
Following a presentation on Big Data in Financial Services that I made as a guest lecturer, I had an opportunity to engage with students one on one. Several had already worked in various financial industry sectors and had found a passion in analytics they wanted to develop deeper skills in. (Stevens’ program requires at least one year of industry experience so students have some practical business skills.)
Many companies are struggling with how to develop or extend their Business Intelligence/ Analytics Competency Centers (BICC or BACC) and evolve their analytic maturity. Creating a pool of data science resources to help business areas with advanced data and analytics can be a valuable contribution. Leveraging data science interns can provide much needed bandwidth and even potentially provide a pipeline of candidates of all too scarce new hire candidates after graduation.
