Watch the Demo: Migration to the Cloud

You’ve probably heard a lot about SAP S/4HANA by now and the S/4HANA Community Space as well as the S/4HANA cookbook are the right places to learn more about it overall. I already wrote about the transition to SAP’s latest Business Suite in my earlier blog post for both, on-premise and cloud editions. Check it out using the link below:

Welcome to 2016 – Transition Paths to SAP S/4HANA | SAP TechEd Lecture of the Week

When it comes to the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Editions, did you ever think about migrating your data to the cloud? We at SAP did and therefore, we actually built the migration engine right into the foundation of the S/4HANA Cloud Editions. While this applies for cloud only, it’s a really smart way to get your data in by file upload with generated templates that you can work with using MS Excel. But it’s not just an upload, it also includes validations and value mapping as this is supported by the new tool. This is available as part of SAP S/4HANA through the ‘Manage Your Solution‘ SAP Fiori application that contains the app for migrating your data. You can execute data migrations directly out of this application and the migration objects are proposed based on the selected preconfigured business processes.

Data Migration based on the ‘Migrate Your Data‘ app at a glance:

  • Create your own migration project to transfer data from file by leveraging the built-in data migration best practices content
  • Select the migration objects you need to transfer according to the given solution scope your very own the SAP S/4HANA cloud edition system
  • Download template files that provide the metadata for the available and required fields as well as some additional technical fields
  • Learn about the fields and fill in your source data into the template according to the structure
  • Upload the populated spreadsheet, view the data and manipulate it
  • Validate the data, perform the value mapping and resolve errors
  • Load the data into SAP S/4HANA

You can find more information on this in the SAP Service Marketplace (SMP) by clicking the link below:

Simply open the ‘Enterprise technology’ area and you’ll find the data migration scope items that are built-in for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Enterprise and Cloud Project Services Edition.

Can the migration be tested with Trial user in SAP S/4HANA Trial Landing Page?

      Hi Juergen,

Unfortunately not. There are two options for the trial system:

      1. S/4HANA on premise trial (hosted aka private cloud): this is a fresh instance for every customer, so you could manipulate data. However in-on premise, we're still using the Rapid Data Migration with SAP Data Services and not the tool shown in this demo. Below is the link to the recently released S/4HANA on premise migration tool:
        http://service.sap.com/public/rds-dm2s4op
The cloud migration with the new tool is not part of the on-premise delivery.
      2. S/4HANA cloud edition trial (public cloud): this is a shared system that is running and every new trial means just a new user for the same system. Therefore the Guided Configuration is limited and you cannot manipulate data.

      Regards,

      FRANK.

      Hi Frank

I have few questions for our migration project

      1) As per the video through the S/4 HANA Guided Configuration under migrate your data a Fiori app is opened and from the excel sheet the data is loaded. Suppose if we have very huge volume of data like 10 million material master data. Then through excel sheet is not possible. Is there any way to load these volume of data?

      2) What is the back end methodology the data is getting loaded on S/4 HANA cloud?. Is it Data Services by IDOC method? or any BAPI method some sort of LSMW technique is used?

      3) Suppose the customer don't have Data Services licenses how to handle the migration project for huge volume.

Kindly let me know how to address all these area.

      Thanks and Regards

      Vijay

      Hi Vijay,

Although you're already in touch with us outside the SCN, I'd like to answer your questions here for the community:

      1) Technically possible, as you can separate and upload multiple templates (e.g. 10x1 Million Records) in one migration run.

      2) The SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit is the tool for the cloud edition. It is a new tool and part of the S/4HANA Cloud Editions and there is no additional license is required. It uses standard interfaces and is tailored for migration to SAP S/4HANA.

      3) The Data Services license is part of SAP S/4HANA for migrating data into it, see links below:

      Hi Frank,

I understand that LTMOM is an R/3 tool and is available for only on-premise and private cloud deployment. Is any option or support available for enhancement of objects in cloud versions?

      Regards,

      Nisha

      Hi Nisha,

No, we do not have the enhancements available for SAP S/4HANA Cloud. But the SAP Migration Cockpit already covers the standard Cloud contents.

      Regards,

      Amitha

So, in case the customer wants to create custom objects or enhance as is possible for on-premise versions.. do we have options available? Are there going to be options available in future?
