SAP University Alliances Young Thinkers Inspire Students and Teachers at Lake Constance
In co-operation with the SAP Sustainability LAB Markdorf, the SAP University Alliances Young Thinkers Team performed a Design Thinking Workshop and a Coding Session for and with students and teachers of Heinrich Suso Gymnasium, European School in Constance.
45 students and 6 teachers came together to learn about SAP, the Young Thinkers Network and to experience Design Thinking and for many the chance to code their first little application. Everybody was excited and curious.
After a short introduction by Christiane Bauer, global lead of the “SAP Young Thinkers Network”, Patrick Hartleitner the headmaster or the school, explained the challenge of the day: “Design the learning experience for the school of the future”.
Four teams consisting of teachers and students worked on the challenge, guided by four SAP Design Thinking Coaches, Jennifer Luk-Seitz, Oliver Bareiss, Michelle Bako and Christiane Bauer. There was a creative energetic atmosphere in the redesigned classroom and the teams were encouraged to come up with wild ideas.
At the same time our tomorrow’s programmers started to code their own computer game with Scratch. SAP colleague and Young Thinkers fellow, Claudia Loff, coached them and answered the many questions that the curious students had. All the students were completely absorbed by the exercise. A few examples of what the students coded are cats chasing a ball, planes flying in front of a city skyline, a penguin trying to escape from massive snowflakes or fishes swimming in the water catching plants. The students worked in teams and helped each other and had a lot of fun.
As always at the end of the Design Thinking exercise the first prototypes of the four teams were presented to the audience. Four teams with four solutions, all pointing out that there is a strong wish to change the current learning experience at schools.
More time, open spaces, teamwork and last not least digital learning were the main and most important points presented in form of role plays and a drone helping to save time.
The feedback from both the students and the teachers was very positive. 100% of the hands were raised when they were asked whether they had fun and learnt something during the day.
The realization of the ideas, is the next step of the school journey into the digital world.
