[Narrator] That was the shout of a technologist when the sensor installed on a factory line started sending data to a computer.
[Narrator] Hearing the yelling, Factory Supervisor rushed to the IT room next door.
[Factory Supervisor] What happened is everything all right?
[Technologist] (Happy and excited showed him a number on a black screen), check this out, sensor data, IoT.
[Super curious Factory Supervisor] I, I ooo what?
[Technologist] Data… Data… Live Data from the line sensor.
[Supervisor] (Losing all his excitement) so what? What do we do with this?
[Narrator] After few dialogs, not gaining anything, Supervisor went back to his work.
This is a true story that was told to me by one of a technologist I met recently and I am sure many of you might have heard or witnessed stories like these.
IoT and hence the digitization is surely the fasted growing phenomenon in technology world, in fact as per some thought leaders this concept has reached its pinnacle, and all Innovations are around enabling IoT to survive the competition.
When physical assets equipped with sensors give an information system the ability to capture, communicate, and process data—and even, in a sense, to collaborate—they create game-changing opportunities: production efficiency, distribution, and innovation all stand to benefit immensely. IoT’s impact is already extending beyond its early, most visible applications. A much greater potential remains to be tapped. Speed to most required change is a must. But like every change, a successful IoT enablement needs few basic pre-requites to begin with.
In this blog I have tried to highlight few basic pre-requisites or parallel activities we need to focus on to put “Things” into perspective.
Education is one of the most important requirements in IoT enablement. Not only the technologists need knowledge but your Organization Leaders and decision maker needs to understand the value. When there is a run, everybody in the flow keeps up an intellectual face and shies away from asking about key “Things”. So make sure you are doing what you can to educate your folks.
A good innovation without a good strategy is useless. Gathering data from sensors is good, but better is to have a well communicated strategy on how this data will be utilized. It’s always me and my, even the best “Things” innovated in the world is of no use unless it’s driving value for me and my organization.
One “Thing” which is surely going to happen in all IoT enablement (failed or successful) is that you will have lots and lots of data. Boy these sensor don’t get tired of sending data and your storage will going to be filled and servers will surely run out of speed, for meaningful data usage you need a system that can process with SPEED, Thanks to SAP HANA for resolving these technology challenges .
Aligning the organization
IoT will challenge traditional organizational roles as information technology becomes widely embedded across assets, inventories, and operations. One focal point will be the IT function, for the Internet of “Things” requires it to assume a transformed role that spans beyond computers, networks, mobile devices, and data centers. Instead, IT will have to join with line managers to oversee IoT systems that are essential to improve both the top and bottom lines.
Whether you have to meet quick turnaround or have a slow multi-year plan, you will surely need help. Thank God, there are people in industry to help you. To ensure successful enablement seek help from available enablers in industry. By not doing so you might be able to save some bucks, but be sure your competitors are having partners speeding their process.
