Design Studio 1.6: What’s New in? A (technical) View

Once again – a compilation on all blogs to get you started into the release 1.6! More content will follow in next weeks, I will also accumulate here blogs from others as in the release 1.5 (Design Studio 1.5: What’s New in? A (technical) View).

Update Feb 2016

Some new blogs included which were created by community last months. Good work all!

Intro

Taking a while in the release of Design Studio 1.6, I want to give you some introduction to some “bigger” features in the this release. Of course there are also other areas of enhancements, which can be valuable for your scenarios.

View on…

Today here the compilation of links for the topics which I could prepare until now. More will follow until New Year.

1. Scorecard Component

A new component for highly customizable tables, also with micro charts. You can define a view on your data – independent of your drill down (to some extend of course).

     Addition:

Design Studio 1.6 – Advanced Selection in Scorecard

Design Studio 1.6 – Visualizing Row Selections in Scorecard

Design Studio 1.6 – Using Multiselect in Scorecard

2. Spreadsheet Component

A component which is capable of planning with copy and paste support. Looks like an excel grid for data entry.

3. Offline Data (CSV files)

Small, but practical feature for offline demonstrations (works only in local mode). You can export any data source to CSV version using the “Initial View Editor” and then use the CSV later for data access. The value is – also filter components are supporting this data source.

4. Global Filters in Online Composition Dashboards

With small scripting you can achieve a global filter function. Somply look for scripts on Slit Cell Cell Container – getDataSources(). With this, you can get a list of data sources in the container and distribute the filters on it.

5. Custom Measures and Top N at Runtime

In Context Menu you will find some options for local calculations and top N function which helps you data analysis.

6. Drag and Drop capability for Crosstab

Crosstab is now also supporting the drag & drop.

7. Integrated CSS Editor in Designer

Small, but effective – in designer you can directly edit your CSV file. This reduces effort also in upload to BIP repository.

8. SAP UI5 Mobile Mode as Component Library (by Mustafa Bensan)

The complete new mode “M” (called main) which is available when you create new application. Some functions are not supported yet, but you can already try out.

9. Graphics and Icons Library

A component for better display of icons, available in main mode.

Addition: Using custom icon font with SAP Design studio 1.6 icon component (by Nithyanandam Venu)

10. Action Sheet Technical Component (main mode only)

A small, but interesting technical component to allow additional action menu in the selected context.

11. Info-Chart Component (by Etienne Guilhaume)

Chart component with more flexible configuration options.

12. Online Composition (by Ravin Angara)

Combining bookmarking functionality with Online Composition Template in local mode

I'm currently on 1.4. Can I upgrade to 1.6 directly (without going thru 1.5) without any issues and my current dashboard would still work as it is?

      Hi Nic,

The answer is yes, you can go directly to 1.6.

the functions from 1.4 should work w/o breaks in higher releases. It means you can upgrade to 1.6, all applications which are not touched will be still in the "1.4 content" version and the 1.6 runtime will execute it.

Of course, you should test the upgrade as usual. In case something is not working, check for documented corrections or solutions - and of nothing found, open an incident.

      Hi Karol,

Many thanks. Will certain perform the test upgrade first.

      Hi Karol,

i am interested in the scorecard component, but i can't open the link and neither the Action Sheet.

      First one says not authorized:

      Second says:

      Thanks & BR,

      Hi Karol,

I'm also interested in the Scorecard component - could you notify me upon release of the article?

Right now, I can get it working with manual data entry.

Binding only works if I use the component's "Generate Initial Scorecard" feature. This will create a column for me, which I can duplicate and change the technical key of the header text ({/dimensions/(MEASURES_DIMENSION)/members/<dimension key>/text}) and cell content text ({'(MEASURES_DIMENSION)':'<dimension key>'/value}) to include other measures.

I can't get it running for Comparison Charts because I cannot find the correct data binding settings. I'll gladly supply more details and an export of the data source if that helps.

      Cheers

      Moritz

Hi, assure first you have the correct row scope defined, you need to have the dimension in the row scope. If you see "complete resultset", the binding to master data will not work.

      Hi Karol,

Appendix 3 of the latest Design Studio Roadmap discusses Fiori and S4/HANA Integration introduced in Design Studio 1.6.  If possible, it would be useful if you could post two technical view blogs to describe how these features are implemented in practice:

      1)  Design Studio BIP integration with Fiori Launchpad

      2)  Consuming S4/HANA data models through transient BEx Queries in Design Studio

      Thanks,

      Mustafa.

      Hi Mustafa

I definitely agree with you that more technical information is required with regards to the Design Studio BIP integration with SAP Fiori.

The roadmap of Design Studio mentions the Fiori Integration, but going through the guides there is no further details available.

      Regards

      Derek

      Hi Sherif,

Basically, yes - you need to open the data source online and then you can export to CSV. You can also setup such CSV file (including the meatadata file) also manually.

have you seen the blog Design Studio 1.6: View on Offline Data (CSV files)?

      Hi Karol,

Point 5 that you have mention is about Custom measures and Top N at Run time, i am using a csv source that was exported from an appliction of Design studio as source when i enable context menu of crosstab and on runtime i dont see filter by measure option in context menu. do you think its limitation with the source i am using .. give your insights on it so that it could help me in going forward...

      Hi Raju,

Yes this one of the limitation of the csv datasource. Keep in mind that this datasource is only for POC purpose.

      Hi Raju,

are you using Design Studio on top of BusinessObjects by any chance? In that case, you could very easily create a unx on top of the csv, which will probably let you use the described capabilities.

      Hi Karol,

I can't find solution for overlapping components, while automatch their to screen resolution, Do you have any advice about this solution?

      I will be appreciated.

      Hi,

As of now we have multi node BOBJ with Designer studio 1.6 on all nodes. We are planning to patch studio to SP3. Should we perform upgrade on all nodes ??

      Thanks,

      Naveen

      Hi Karol,

I just noticed that the new standard UI5 m component Filterbar does not support the method setDatasource. I was hoping to replace the filter line while migrating from commons to m library. The filter line supports the method whereas the filter bar does not.

Do you know if that is still in the making? At least I couldn't find any notes mentioning that. There is a fix being implemented for the filter bar for SP4 regarding bookmarks though https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/notes/2376209/E.

      Kind regards
      Martin

We have Design Studio 1.6 SP2 on 4.1, now we are upgrading BI to 4.2. Do I have to uninstall Design Studio addon to install new Design STudio 1.6? I couldnt find the answer in guides.
      Thanks
