SAP WEBGUI rendering issue with Internet Explorer

There are situations where you can not change browser (Internet Explorer) due to other dependent custom developed applications and compatibility issue. You want to use SAP webgui with lower version of IE and SAP_Basis 700 and faces webgui rendering issue while activating same.

Issue :

-SAP webgui rendering issue in ECC6 with lower version of internet explorer (IE8).

-Portal ESS links hangs on splash screen “SAP GUI for HTML” where backend system is ECC6 and browser is lower version of IE.

Analysis :

System detail – ECC6 with SAP_Basis 700 and Kernel 721 Ext, Portal NW7.3 with backend system as SAP_Basis 700 system.

While testing webgui and portal ESS in IE11, it works fine but with lower version of IE (ex. IE8, IE9) displays splash screen “SAP GUI for HTML” and keeps rendering.

Make sure you have below settings in your ECC/backend system-

  • ICM parameters (icm/server_port_0 and icm/host_name_full ) are set and active, check in SMICM.
  • All required services (/default_host/sap/bc/gui/sap/its/webgui ; /default_host/sap/public/bc/ur ;  /default_host/sap/public/bc/its/mimes) are active in SICF.
  • All required services are published through SE80 or tcode – SIAC_PUBLISH_ALL_INTERNAL.
  • Make sure you have latest supported version of SAP kernel (disp+work software) as per PAM.
  • Compatibility mode of IE is activated for all sites.

Solution :

Go to tcode : SICF

Browse service :  /default_host/sap/bc/gui/sap/its/webgui

Click on Display<-> Change mode.

In Service Data tab, click on GUI Configuration

SAP SICF Webgui .jpg

Add new parameter as below-

Parameter Name : ~WEBGUI_NEW_DESIGN  and Value : 1

Test SAP webgui or ESS now which works fine in IE8.

For more information refer below SAP notes-

1637287 – DCK: New design for SAP GUI for HTML in SAP_BASIS 700/701

1651937 – Integrated ITS 7.02: WEBGUI is not loading (“Please wait” message)

1637287 – DCK: New design for SAP GUI for HTML in SAP_BASIS 700/701

1656975 – How to set the theme for SAPGUI for HTML?

—————————————————————————————————————————-

Additional Information :

If even after using SAP kernel 7.20/7.21 as a downward-compatible kernel (DCK) in systems with SAP_BASIS 700 or 701, the system continues to use the conventional display using Trade Show Design by default.

By entering the parameter  ( ~webgui_new_design=1 ) in the URL or in the ICF service definition, however, you can also switch to the new display in older SAP releases. Switching to the new display can also be implemented for each service.

Kindly note, above solution will work with SAP kernel 7.20 patch level 108 or above or SAP kernel 7.21 patch level 215 or above in a system with SAP_BASIS 7.00 or 7.01.

      Hi Ashish,

Interesting Blog. Thanks for sharing this information regarding Unified Rendering. I have some additional suggestions.

Can you add the information re the required Kernel versions that are specified in note 1637287

      http://support.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1637287

Will then be clearer that need certain versions of the 720/721 Kernel to use this parameter ~webgui_new_design

Also it would be useful to change the ~theme parameter of the WebGUI service to one of those mentioned in the note http://support.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1656975

For example like ~theme sap_tradeshow, as ~theme sl is no longer used

      Regards,

      Oisin
