Lumira and the SAP BusinessObjects Edge Edition
SAP Lumira is a scalable solution. It is a good fit for all SAP BI deployments, regardless of size, and uses an architecture that is familiar to and trusted by IT departments currently administering SAP BI.
SAP Lumira can also be deployed without IT involvement by individuals (Lumira Desktop) and teams (Lumira Team Server). However, what makes it truly scalable is that there is a technology adoption path between these multiple options.
There are numerous scenarios in SAP BusinessObjects Edge edition to illustrate this path. Earlier this year, during our SAPinsider Q & A event (“Will Your Web Intelligence Journey Lead You into Lumira?”), SAP’s Ty Miller provided a real-time answer to the following question:
Question
Is Lumira included with Edge BI Licenses?
Ty Miller: Lumira requires an add-on license for Edge BI. You have two options:
Option 1: You can purchase Lumira Server for Teams which is a very low-maintenance server solution that can literally be deployed on a laptop or desktop… [Y]ou can connect it to the Universes you have running on your Edge BI deployment.
Option 2: [There is] an add-on that you can deploy to your existing Edge BI server which will give IT the ability to govern a Lumira deployment while giving business users the rich interactivity, data access (again optionally governed by IT), visualization, and story creation capabilities that they want in a trusted data discovery tool.
In a follow-up call with Ty, he spoke of the path from Lumira Server for Teams to Lumira Server for the BI Platform:
[The Lumira Server for Teams] deployment option is suited to groups who need a very quickly deployable solution that does not require IT intervention. Such groups frequently evolve to need the governance and IT assistance of a trusted data discovery solution. They can do this by moving their content to Lumira Server for the BI platform, either under their Edge license, or they can move to the Lumira Server for the BI platform. The Edge license covers both scenarios.
Ty emphasized that moving from the non-trusted to the trusted database scenario is quite simple: they simply have to republish their documents from the Lumira Server for Teams to the Lumira Server for the BI platform. With the release of Lumira 1.28, this technology adoption path gets even smoother. The addition of promotion management not only makes it easier to develop Lumira stories in a separate environment, but also makes this technology adoption path even easier.
