This week: Empower your managers to drive newcomer creativity

In order for organizations to survive in today’s fast-paced world of work, they have to be creative, innovative, and agile. Many organizations purposely seek out talent that will help them achieve this, but it can be difficult for new employees to be creative and inventive while also trying to fit in to the company’s existing culture and practices. How can we develop onboarding processes that foster newcomer creativity? According to Harris (Neeley School of Business, Texas Christian University) and colleagues in their recent Personnel Psychology publication, the answer lies within the managers. They found that empowering managers in the onboarding process led not only to greater newcomer role clarity and performance, but also to creative problem-solving. This suggests that managers should be a key component of onboarding creative and innovative employees.
