SAP Sustainability Labs Markdorf and Siegen (People first)

In our role as enabler for sustainability we are developing many products for our customers, to support them in their engagement for sustainability. It is also very important for us to be a role model for sustainability. So, we do what we preach.

People centric approach

Sustainability is based on the three pillars ”People, Planet and Profit”, also known as triple bottom line. Managing the colleagues in a sustainable way is also a passion of the Sustainability Lab. The whole management team is dedicated to this. Work life balance and employee heath index are well known KPIs and managed in a responsible way.

But, what does this mean in concrete actions? For example, in 2014 we trained more than 30 colleagues for their participation in a local triathlon event. The trainer was the triathlon World Champion Daniel Unger. This was a very big motivation to all employees to take more care about their sport activities and their personal health. Besides this, quite a lot of colleagues form their own training teams and do running, walking or biking during lunch time or after work. Also, a team of 10 participates once a year in a local spinning marathon, a fundraising event to support deprived children in the Lake Constance area.

Another example how we motivate employee integration is our sustainability garden. With respect to biodiversity we are using part of the company garden environment to create a sustainability garden. This is a project which will last over the next 5 years. A team of colleagues has been formed to set up and implement a concept for the garden. But all employees can participate, e. g with godparenthoods for plants and trees. Some colleagues who are beekeepers take care of our Lab-owned bees.

Last but not least the Lab grants a mobility award for colleagues who leave their car at home and come to work sustainably, using bikes or public transport. This changed the behavior amongst the employees quite a lot and results in about 15% more sustainable commuting.

In the attached list you can find more of these initiatives. Many of them are driven in close collaboration with the global departments (Health, HR, car fleet, sustainability team…) and the local Sustainability Champions.

  • Team participation in regional sport events
  • Local bicycle pool
  • Sustainable Mobility award
  • Health Days with many local activities
  • Monthly info sessions for all employees about sustainability topics, so called “Sustainability Corners”
  • Sustainability Garden
  • Summer event including family
  • Christmas party
  • Christmas party for the employee’s children
  • Massage offering every week
  • E-car pool
