BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore organized its annual technology festival called Phase Shift on 19 & 20 September 2015. This festival involved showcases and activities for the multitude of departments within the college. It is one of the oldest college of the country and is part of the SAP University Alliances program.

SAP University Alliances were invited to be part of the festival as partners and we contributed by organizing a design thinking workshop for close to 20 students and a hackathon on analytics using SAP Lumira for 40 students on 20 September 2015.

The Design Thinking workshop focused on giving the participants a 1 day experience of all the processes of DT. We started off the workshops with the Marshmallow Challenge to set some core learning(s) on Design Thinking in place as foundation. These included topics such as team dynamics, respecting and extending ideas by others, resource management, rapid prototyping etc. Then the workshop moved on to the "problem space" where the participants tried to paint a picture of the day in the life of their target users by creating personas. They defined POVs to help them in the solution space. We gave the participants ready made questions (guide questions) to help them map their users better but we delayed handing out the sheets so that the participants could appreciate how guide questions (or prior preparation) leads to a significant reduction in the time to innovation.

We then moved on to the solution space where the participants brainstormed many ideas on what kind of a mobile app would be most suitable for their target users. They got time to vote for the best of ideas. Finally the participants presented their solutions to all the other teams and yes there were many instances of cross scrutiny! 🙂

In parallel we ran a hackathon on analytics using SAP Lumira which as executed by experts from the BI/ Analytics team at SAP Labs. These students got a great overview of Business Intelligence and Analytics by Muthu and Amit. This we believe would build a solid foundation of databases/ BI and Analytic for the students. The students were then introduced to SAP Lumira as a powerful frontend tool to tackle large data sets and processing them into beautiful visualizations. These students were given exercises to sharpen their skills before they were given their challenge questions. The winners were evaluated and got t-shirts!

Thank you BMS College of Engineering for making us part of this grand event!
