      ABAP Rocks!

I'm glad to read about the continuous investments of SAP in the ABAP language and tools.

I'm curious about the future of ABAP in say 3 to 5 years. I heard some people say that the dominant role of ABAP within the SAP landscape will be reduced or that ABAP will even disappear into the background. Will we (consultants) only be developing applications on HANA Cloud Platform or directly on HANA (or extending S/4 Hana in the cloud), what language(s) will we be using for that (java, javascript, php, python ...)?

Until now, ABAP is only available as language for on-premise SAP-systems, but will SAP add an ABAP runtime enviroment to for example the HANA application server or even to HCP or S4-HANA in the cloud?

      Hi B.Meijs,

as stated in this document, ABAP platform is and continues to be the base for the majority of SAP applications. The future investments will strengthen the main ABAP platform assets (application server, programming environment, ABAP language and tools) and serve new and emerging business scenarios.

ABAP platform is the foundation for both the cloud and on-premise editions of SAP S/4HANA, the same ABAP capabilities will be available for each edition. To make ABAP platform ready for S/4HANA, cloud edition, ABAP platform capabilities were extended to the cloud: cloud-enabling of ABAP server, cloud operation (admin tasks, technical cloud services), user management. To implement enhancements within SAP S/4HANA software in the cloud, SAP offers in-app key user extensibility (for small custom changes and extensions e.g. as for adapting UI layout, adding custom fields, changing business logic, changing analytic report) using ABAP with reduced feature set for the cloud. To integrate with other SAP cloud applications and 3rd party solutions, build new SAP Fiori UIs or implement completely new applications loosely coupled with ABAP backend of S/4HANA cloud edition, side-by-side extensibility with SAP HANA Cloud Platform can be used. There you can use such technologies as SAP Fiori, HTML5 based, Web IDE, Java, native SAP HANA application services. And last but not least for the ABAP add-ons tightly coupled with ABAP applications of SAP S/4HANA, cloud edition, SAP is working now to offer the concept of managed in-app extensibility. More information about extensibility in the blogs http://scn.sap.com/community/s4hana/blog/2015/07/15/s4hana-extensibility-the-new-white-paper , http://scn.sap.com/community/s4hana/blog/2015/09/30/the-key-user-extensibility-tools-of-s4-hana.

More information will be provided also later on SCN. Stay tuned!

      Hi Olga,

I am curious to know in future if we are going to see SAP deprecate certain aspects of the ABAP language constructs like lists, alv reports and module pools.

I was wondering if java either as a dual stack or within the same stack is required for version 7.5, someone heard it was and if someone can either say definitively yes or no and/or point to a resource on the subject, it would be appreciated.  Currently we do not have a separate java stack as we didn't have a need for it.

      Hi Bruce,
dual stack is no longer supported in 7.5.

      Best regards

According to the help page below, the implementation of Fiori apps on NW 7.5 requires a HANA database. Can you confirm that?

      https://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw75/helpdata/en/d7/bd4b5d70d94f09bcf99b221a7a1688/content.htm?frameset=/en/e9/d78b6aa0fc4f0ea0f41408dbc8a7ad/frameset.htm&current_toc=/en/b3/69e10d33664f0a9896e8d119620f64/plain.htm&node_id=34&show_children=true#jump3

Forget my question. I think I know the answer. The help was wrong...can be any any database as long as the apps are transactional. Because if I ran Baking services 9.0 and a few apps on NW 7.40. When I upgrade my NW 7.40 to 7.50, those apps must still run.

      Hi Olga,

I'm trying to install NetWeaver 7.5 on trail version, but it shows the following error during the installation. Could you help me?

An error occurred while processing option System Rename > Standard System > SAP System Rename( Last error reported by the step: Assertion failed: Unable to generate a new password for database login 'sa'. Refer to trace file sapinst_dev.log for further information.). You can now:
Choose Retry to repeat the current step.
Choose Log Files to get more information about the error.
Stop the option and continue later.
Log files are written to /tmp/sapinst_instdir/NW73/SBC/STANDARD.

      Hi Marcio,

I work with Olga and am responsible for rollout, blogs etc re ABAP Trial and Developer Editions.

To simplify the install, we do not permit trial users to rename the system.

If you have any other questions re the trial / dev editions, if you add the user hashtag #ABAP_Trial, I will be monitoring it (please understand that there may be a delay).

      Best wishes Julie R Plummer.
