In today's blog post, we would like to inform you about an improvement in the DBA Cockpit screens for accessing the IBM DB2 for i system catalog.

The IBM DB2 for i system catalog consists of views and tables containing information about the definition of database objects such as base tables, views, or indexes. The information found therein can be used, for instance, to check the existence of a particular database object (independent of whether it is known in the SAP Data Dictionary or not) or to map SQL names (used in an SAP system) to IBM i system object names (used on IBM i operating system level, with a maximum length of 10 characters).

The system catalog views are not visible in the SAP Data Dictionary and thus cannot be read with the SAP Data Browser (transaction SE16). But there are screens available in the DBA Cockpit that give access to the most important catalog views.

The originally available screens for viewing the system catalog have been enhanced and new screens have been added for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Enhancement Package 2, SAP NetWeaver 7.3, and higher. Refer to SAP Note 2188147 – IBM i: Enhancements in the DBA Cockpit for IBM i - System Catalog Views about how to get these new options.

To display a system catalog view, call transaction DBACOCKPIT and select the system you want to monitor. In the navigation frame, open the folder Diagnostics -> System Catalog Views and choose the required catalog view.

For detailed information about the system catalog views and their fields, see the IBM documentation DB2 for i SQL Reference.

The new screens offer options to sort the displayed rows, to restrict the number of returned rows, and to filter the data by various criteria that can be applied to all catalog view columns. After you have finished specifying your new selections, select the button Apply selection on the upper left to refresh the list with the new restrictions or sort order.

Depending on the chosen option, the output table contains additional pushbuttons. Select a row of the output table and choose a pushbutton to navigate to one of the other options, showing further information about the selected object.

The DBA Cockpit guide has been updated with the new options and is available in the SAP Help Portal under Technology Platform -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NetWeaver 7.3 -> Application Help -> Function-Oriented View. In this document, follow the path Database Administration -> Database Administration for IBM DB2 for i -> CCMS: IBM DB2 for i -> Diagnostics (IBM DB2 for i) -> System Catalog Views (IBM DB2 for i).
