Migration form BOXIR3 to BI4.1SP6
I want to share some of my findings on this mission ‘possible – on the way from good old Deski to new brave WebI.
Still the customer users are fond of Deski and will miss the tool.
“Can we set the timeout for 8 hours?” – – a user asks – since in deski you could keep the tool up and running the whole time. Webi in the browser has a timeout set!
We are testing 240 min timeout at the moment.
The RCT tool is still a bit -ahm – could be better – let’s phrase it this way:
Crucial it seems to run as administrator – which makes it tricky on the windows 2012 server…
Still it does not remember more the one login detail – I’ll have to check if there is an ini file or sg.
Some RCT installation will not run properly – don’t ask why!
Some features are already working but the RCT gives an error: e.g.: do not Update SQL. – gets converted pretty well, but the conversion log reports an error / warning: usupported option!. –
Strugling with FHSQL though – oracle works – investigation ongoing how to geht teradata FHSQL to be converted!
to be continued

Have the same scenario on a customer. What confuses me is DCP (Desktop Compability Pack). If RCT (Report Conversion Tool) converts the deski reports to webi (even if they created with FHSQL query) why we need the DCP? In which scenario is using DCP efficient? Do you have any idea?
DCP is used if you don't want to convert the reports to WEBI. Some organizations like us, we have 1000s deski reports, converting all of them at once, it is lot of work.
DCP also mainly used if time critical for migration to 4.1, if you are in position to ocnvert the deski reports to webi before the live date, you can still keep the deski copies in 4.1 and eventually convert them after you go live.
Hope it makes sense.
Well meanwhile I could imagine it would be a good idea to keep deski in the Portfolio - it is still a valuable tool - you could do so "pretty" things with it - and the Servers are powerful enough now and could easily manage an additional DCP Server(Service) to have booth worlds - webi and deski running along ... but that's not reality so let's try to get the deskis to webis...

Hi ,
For companies which would not convert Deski to Webi, yes DCP makes sense.
and yes " it is still a valuable tool - you could do so "pretty" things with it -" DCP makes sense.
But converting them with RCT (even if you have 1000 deski) is not a lot of work (if i'm not missing something). It takes seconds. Maybe %10-%20 of deski (depending on it's complexity) to webi converts partially and needs rework. That's why if you plan to convert them to webi in a time then DCP is wasting time, and you need a desktop client tool to access them 🙂
Thanks for your both replies
