What is new for Design Studio in BI4.1 SP06 – BI Workspace

Reviewing the Early Knowledge Transfer materials for BI4.1 SP06, under “BI Platform Enhancement” it lists “BI Workspace Enhancements – BI Workspace support Design Studio document”

I thought I would try it out.  You can look at Christina Obry’s blog on how to create a BI Workspace Tutorial: How to customize BI launch pad home page to create a BI Workspace or Creating a BI Workspace in BI4 Feature Pack 3

I created a BI Workspace with a Web Intelligence Report and a Design Studio application I created the other day (see Getting Familiar with Online Composition in Design Studio 1.5 )

I couldn’t think of a way to link to the two items – my main purpose was to use Design Studio inside a BI Workspace.

Then from the BI Launchpad, I can open (“consume”) the Workspace:

I can do online composition:

I can open the composition inside the BI Workspace:

I can also save another composition view.

At this point I thought I would see if or how a BI Workspace would appear on the BI Mobile application; it does not work, although individually Web Intelligence and Design Studio are supported on SAP Mobile BI.

By itself, the online composition for Design Studio works well on BI Mobile (landscape mode):

      Hi Tammy,

      Thanks for writing up this useful new feature.  I have two questions:

      1)  You mentioned that you couldn't think of a way to link the WebI and Design Studio modules in the workspace.  I wonder if the URL parameter mechanism would work in this scenario?  For example using the WebI table to filter the content of the Design Studio app by building a parameterised URL based on a selected row in the WebI table and then calling this URL;

      2)  I assume the saving of the composition view as per your example above also works as expected when executed on the BI mobile app.  Can you confirm this?

      Regards,

      Mustafa.

      Hi Mustafa - #1 is a good idea I hadn't considered; in my case I didn't have the data in my sandbox to link the data which is why I couldn't think of how to link them

      #2 is a yes - saving the composition is possible; so far I can't create though - could be just me, as I can't drag over the smart object.  I am using an iPad Air.

      Thanks Tammy.  Regarding creation of a composition in BI Mobile, I remember during the World Premiere of DS 1.4, Q & A and Roadmap sessions at TechEd last year that it was explicitly mentioned drag and drop composition was not supported on the BI Mobile app.  It looks like this limitation still holds true for DS 1.5 based on your experience.
