Day 1 of the first SAP InnoJam Fashion with more than 20 female students from German universities was hosted by University Alliances at SAP Headquarters, Walldorf, Germany.

The event was kicked off in the morning by SAP CIO Helen Arnold. She welcomed the students and talked about her career path also mentioning that she participated in an overnight competition 20 years ago and knows about the excitement and the possibilities attendees can take of such a great challenge. Moreover, she motivated the students to start their careers, since nowadays only 13% of working women hold excecutive positions. Also SAP Recruiting representative Kai Hucker highlighted that SAP is seeking for a significant rise of female professionals in leading positions.

SAP InnoJam is a 32 hours coding contest where participants learn and use SAP technologies, partner with fellow participants to build a prototype solution for a real-life business scenario and work with domain experts who share their knowledge and expertise with the crowd. Throughout two days the InnoJamers work on paper prototypes and later on build a running prototype solution and present in front of a jury.

Design Thinking Phase

During a four hour lasting Design Thinking period instructed by the coaches Matthias Edinger and Jürgen Wagner the female students from German universities designed prototype ideas for an application based on SAP Hana Cloud Platform and SAP UI5. Michael Osthof and christoph.schroeder%40sap.com, both IBU Retail, Challenge Owner introduced the contest theme: Creating a smart In-Store Experience for Fashion by designing the perfect in-store shopping experience powered by an application to bring a fashion shopping trip to the next level the students started to improve widely known fitting room situations via their app models. Also he addressed the growing importance of mobile applications for the fashion industry and the retail sector.

Finally before dinner time the actual coding phase began! The four teams spread within the building – discussing, pondering and enjoying a tent camp atmosphere. Supported by five expert SAP coaches - Julia Lakatos, Julian Breuksch, Christian Heller, Denise Nepraunig and Rui Nogueira -  this night will bring less sleep, but all sorts of fun. Code, code, code!
