I am sure most of us have been asked to choose one or combinations of the following tools to build an Enterprise Data Warehouse.

(1) BW on HANA

(2) Enterprise HANA

(3) HANA Live

It’s an interesting topic and I have discussed this with various folks. There are number of factors that we need to consider before we finalize these tools. It varies based on customer, eco systems(source, ETL and reporting tools) in the landscape, support team…etc. I have listed some of the key factors and compared with these 3 tools.

Criteria BW on HANA Enterprise HANA HANA Live
Significant current BW investment Yes
Significant SAP sources Yes
Significant non-SAP sources Yes
Zero data latency and operational reporting from SAP systems Yes
Business content delivery Yes Yes
Data cleansing & Data harmonization Yes Yes
Time dependent master data More Limited Limited
Reuse features(e.g.:Hierarchy) from SAP business suite Yes
Integration with big data Limited More
Planning capabilities More Less
Predictive analystics Limited More
Maturity of tool More Less Less
Availabitly of competent resources More Less Less

Here is the summary if we need to do this in 1 line.

  • May go with BW on HANA and HANA live if BW has been in the landscpae for a while
  • May go with enterprise HANA + HANA live if BW is currently not in the landscape
  • May go with BW on HANA + enterprise HANA + HANA live if BW has been in the landscpae and leverage features of enterprise HANA

Great post. I started my research today for exactly such an overview. I think developing and sharing this kind of overview is very helpful in strategically rethinking reporting landscapes.

However I feel that the “tool” dimension is not yet complete. In reality we face many customer situations with Non-HANA BW´s. We further should distinguish between “Embedded BW” (within SoH), “BW on HANA” (stand-alone) and “Enterprise HANA”
(I assume you mean SoH or s4/HANA?). Last but not least we should add “SAP Simple Finance” in order to cover the finance reporting as well within this overview.

Regarding your different remarks in the table I feel that these should be cross-checked or at least explained. Examples:

    1. Zero data latency and operational reporting from SAP systems:  YES for HANA
live but no YES for Enterprise HANA – Why?
    2. Time dependent master data: LIMITED for Enterprise HANA – Why?
    3. Reuse features(e.g.:Hierarchy) from SAP business suite: No YES for Enterprise HANA – Why?
    4. Planning capabilities: Less for Enterprise HANA – Why? –> Introduction
      of SAP Simple Finance

Please let me know if I misunderstood you in some points.

    Regards

    Reinhold

Thanks for your comments. I agree that this can be enhanced with some more deciding factors.

      Refer my comments below

      • Zero data latency and operational reporting from SAP systems:  HANA live comes with standard views which access the base tables in SAP business suite. This feature is not available in eneterprise/native HANA.
      • Time dependent master data: In BW, the time dependency contains multiple features such as entire hierachy as time-dependent, time-dependent hierarchy structure, key date in BEX query designer…etc. These are not available in eneterprise/native HANA.
      • Reuse features(e.g.:Hierarchy) from SAP business suite: BW can extract hierarchy from SAP using standard extractors. BW can also store and display the hierachy similar to SAP. This is not available in eneterprise/native HANA.
      • Planning capabilities: BW contains Integrated Planning and Business Planning and Consolidation. These are not available in eneterprise/native HANA.
