You’ve probably heard of Dunkin Donuts.  Ever wondered what it takes to serve more than 3 million customers per day with an array of 52 varieties of donuts and more than a dozen coffee beverages across 8000 stores?  Literally speaking, 100 million pounds of coffee, 112 million pounds of sugar and 24 million gallons of milk annually with a fleet of trucks that log about 17 million miles each year delivering roughly 70 million cases of products.  In a nutshell, that’s National DCP for you. National DCP is the $ 2 billion exclusive supply chain management cooperative that manages sourcing, purchasing and distribution for Dunkin Donuts across 51 countries.

National DCP was formed through the merger of multiple entities with the objective of enabling seamless supply chain operations for Dunkin Donuts. A disparate suite of solutions and processes inherited from the merging entities meant that the need of the hour at National DCP was a quantum leap of technology that improved operational efficiency and collaboration. For Darrell Riekenna, Chief Information officer at National DCP, the task was cut out.  His goal was to plan and implement an enterprise-wide solution that aligned business processes with a new technology infrastructure, spurred by the merger of five regional food and beverage supply companies into a national cooperative.

That was genesis of Project FreshStart. Project FreshStart envisaged a holistic approach towards revamping the supply chain technology landscape at National DCP.  While SAP Business Suite on HANA was deployed as the as backbone, Ariba Sourcing, Ariba Contract Management and the Ariba Business Network were leveraged to extend the sourcing and procurement process beyond the four walls of the enterprise. The result was a tightly woven supply chain ecosystem that delivered increased spend coverage, provided greater visibility on operations and improved supplier collaboration.
