According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), U.S. railroads in 2014 moved over 28 billion carloads and intermodal loads, which is the highest annual tally in eight years. And this trend is predicted to continue this year. AAR Senior Vice President of Policy and Economics, John Gray, believes 2015 "will be another busy year as the economy continues to grow, and the nation's railroads work to be responsive, flexible, and efficient for their customers."

Although this is great news for railway transportation providers, it is a reason for concern. For example, complex technical assets – such as locomotives, high-speed trains, and cargo freight cars – must be inspected and maintained on a regular basis to ensure safe, predictable, and compliant transportation. Considering the size of the fleet, this can be quite an undertaking for the limited pool of inspectors, technicians, and engineers on hand. And if maintenance teams do not have an integrated view of reported issues, scheduled activities, and compliance requirements from a single source, it can be near impossible.
