As a marketer for the SAP Service and Support organization, it is my job to show customers how they can Run Simple. Personally, I am curious to learn about the different theories and approaches on achieving simplicity outside of SAP. So, I started searching on Google. The search results were very surprising! After watching a few TED talks and reading some pretty heavy philosophical and scientific papers, I needed some lighter content. That’s when I came across the article, “The Science of Simplicity: Why Successful People Wear the Same Thing Every Day.” I fully expected the article to be a joke or a satire of some sort, but it actually made a lot of sense!
The article starts out by asking: “Have you ever thought about how much time you likely waste deciding what to wear in the morning?” It goes on to make the point that spending time and energy on “small decisions” impairs our ability to focus on the larger picture and make important decisions. Backed by a number of scientific studies, “decision fatigue” is the term commonly used to describe this phenomenon. Apparently, this is why Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and President Obama always dress like this…
…so they can focus all their decision-making energy on what’s really important.
