Building Real-Time Visualizations with Design Studio and SAP Event Stream Processor ASUG Webcast Recap
SAP provided this as an ASUG webcast last week. Below are my notes.
The Real time extension delivered in 1.4 of Design Studio
Figure 1: Source: SAP
Figure 1 explains real-time. This solution uses a pull based timer, delivered in package, pull their BW data – for near real time
Figure 2: Source: SAP
The SDK datasource is based on streaming data from ESP (Event Stream Processor), connected to out of the box DS standard chart
Streaming use case chart is using a time based line chart
Figure 3: Source: SAP
Figure 3 shows a streaming platform, with a Web socket protocol and a REST provider, giving you real time access
SAP says “Supported Platforms: BIP Version 4.0 or 4.1 and ESP 5.1 SP09”

The time based line charts’ data points are disassociated from the x axis; this allows it to handle null values which the normal line chart cannot handle. You can see in Chart 1 of Figure 4 is the time based line chart. The normal line chart is Chart 2 of Figure 4, where its values are evenly spaced even though the data points are in different points in time. This makes it difficult to see it clearly
Chart 1’s data points are spaced on time; if there is a null the time based line chart will join the points but you see it shows the time elapsed between the points where there is a null.

Figure 5 shows the Timer Component, which is available for free download as part of the Design Studio SDK samples

Figure 6 shows this feature requires latest version of stream processor
This works in BIP and local mode
The SAP speaker recommends work with latest version of stream processor
Q: Is there anything new in 1.5 with real-time?
A: No, 1.5 – nothing new; in 1.6 they plan to integrate with HANA
Q: What are some use cases?
A: IoT – times / devices in factories, Robots, Wind farms, factories
Connect to a streaming data source: Design Studio 1.4
Create a time-based line chart with streaming data source: Design Studio 1.4
