Healthcare “Partnerships” Can Go Far Beyond Business – They Can Change People’s Lives

Healthcare is an extremely active subject across all social circles and the media, because invariably, healthcare touches everyone’s life.  And as important as health and well-being are to people, unfortunately, healthcare may bring sad stories.

There are approximately 14 Million new cancer patients every year diagnosed globally.  Most everyone has been, are or will be, touched by a cancer diagnosis at some point in our lives – personally, within our families, or our friends.  Despite everything we learn across modern medicine, perhaps most tragically, only one third of the prescribed chemotherapeutic treatments are effective.   Not very encouraging odds.

But creative thinking in healthcare, particular where healthcare providers think outside the box in creative partnerships, may greatly increase odds of successful intervention and treatment, and fundamentally change people’s lives.

Imagine you had a large database in the cloud with millions of patient records.  And imagine further, that you as a Doctor could search in this database, in real-time, to find a patient who has been treated successfully, and matches the profile and characteristics of the patient you are treating.   The result, is a probability of finding a more promising treatment option – right away.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has recently developed such a solution.  ASCO is a non-profit network of more than 35,000 oncology professionals dedicated to providing the highest- quality resources in education, policy, and the pioneering of clinical research to advance the care of patients with cancer.

SAP is proud to be a partner with ASCO to provide the technical expertise to deliver on their vision. ASCO is using a variety of SAP solutions such as HANA, and the Lumira Server, as well as coordinating with Medical Research Insights, an innovative application, which is the result of a co-innovation project with the National Center for Tumor research in Heidelberg.

But, they key is the “Vision.”

All the patient data from the practices working with ASCO will be collected and processed in an  Enterprise Cloud.  The ability of ASCO/SAP to process genomics and clinical data including unstructured data in the HANA platform is a true differentiator for our customers and partners.

The outcome is improved cancer care.

The result is improving lives
