I was very excited to start my day seeing a blog by Swisscom about deriving more value from Hadoop using Lumira and HANA. While I don’t understand German, the title seemed promising (Big Data und SAP? Ja, HANA und Hadoop!) and I found a kind college to translate.

Even to a non-German speaker the benefits are clear from the architecture diagrams Swisscom has provided.

In a nutshell, HANA and Hadoop are incredibly complementary. Customers can store vast and varied data thanks to the scalability and cost-effectiveness of Hadoop. And they can leverage SAP HANA for data requiring real-time analytics or business-critical information. Hadoop can also be a cost-effective tool for data storage, rather than archiving to tape. HANA can address Big Data challenges by connecting to Hadoop using the Hive interface.

Hadoop’s cost-effective and scalable nature means you can store more data than ever before. SAP Lumira lets you derive more value from your HANA and Hadoop deployments by doing analysis and creating stories of directly against or HANA or Hadoop (thru EMR, Impala, and Hive). SAP Infinite Insights can be leveraged to tease out more information from data stored in Big Data systems.

Big Data is a new field many of our customers are just embarking on--looking forward to seeing the interesting applications of it.
