Solution Manager Update – Upgrade Planning
Following on from the November Blog that discussed a program approach to upgrades we now look into how we can become more efficient in the upgrade process. SAP claims that there is a 62% reduction in project duration (21 to 8 weeks) for an Enhancement Pack upgrade over a traditional version upgrade. Getting the project planning right is key to achieving this along with utilizing Solution Manager in the upgrade. Once the planning and execution is complete this can then be turned into a repeatable process. Below are the tools and system tasks that support the planning phase for an upgrade.

System Preparation tasks:
- Activate UPL – See SAP Note 1828848 – Usage and Procedure Logging: Technical prerequisite – Should run for 3 months
- Upgrade Solution Manager
- Run the Scope and Effort Analyzer (SEA) to help scope and plan upgrade effort
These tools and tasks will help identify innovations, risks, effort, dependencies and hardware requirements for input into the planning process. Along with this the following key areas should be added to your ALM Roadmap in order to fully realize the benefits of Solution Manager in the upgrade process:
- IT Portfolio and Project Management integration (ITPPM) – repeatable project plan via custom roadmaps with tasks integrated into change management
- Scope and effort analyzer(SEA) – assess the impact of the upgrade and effort required without upgrading a system
- Custom Development Management Cockpit (CDMC) – eliminate redundant customizations
- Centralized test management (BPCA) – risk based test optimization to reduce testing effort
- Central change and transport management (CHaRM) – reduce effort in managing releases across the Landscape
