Upgrade Steps SUP 2.X to SMP 2.3

To upgrade to SMP 2.3 from a lower version, the server first needs to be upgraded to SUP 2.2 and then to SMP 2.3. We cannot upgrade the server directly from a version lower than SUP 2.2 to SMP 2.3.

NOTE:

If you have a cluster environment, then upgrade the primary node and then move to the secondary node.

Below are the steps mentioned briefly, to be followed to upgrade to SUP 2.2 from a lower version.(say 2.1.x)

Data Tier Upgrade:

Step1:

The Data tier needs to be upgraded first and then the application tier. Down load all the required upgrade software from SAP market place. Below are the names of files needed which include the patches also.

  1. 1) 51045898-Server-Runtime
  2. 2) SUP22002_0-21010537
  3. 3) SUP22003_0-21010537
  4. 4) SUP22004_0-21010537
  5. 5) SUP22004_0-21010537

Step2:

Before the upgrade starts, make sure an image of the current data tier and application tier are being taken backup by the respective server team.

Step3:

Stop all the services of the SUP and data tier (Advantage DB, Cache DB, Cluster DB and LogData DB) services.

Step4:

Run the upgrade executable file as an Administrator.

SUP Application Tier Upgrade:

Step1:

Before the upgrade starts, make sure an image of the current data tier and application tier are being taken a backup by the server team.

Step3:

Stop the SUP services and start the Data Tier. The Data tier need to be started during the upgrade of the application tier as the SUP services need to connect to Data tier for the upgrade to get completed.

Step4:

Run the upgrade executable file as an Administrator.

NOTE:

Patch Upgrade:

There are 4 patches for the SUP 2.2 upgrade process and you need not apply patches to move to SMP 2.3. But if you wish to stay on SUP 2.2 for some more time then all the patches are to be applied one at a time starting with data tier first.  I.e. apply patch 1 to data tier, Patch1 on application tier and then patch2 on Data tier, patch2 on application tier and so on.

Below are the steps mentioned briefly, to be followed to upgrade to SMP 2.3 from SUP 2.2.
