SAP Labs India IT – E-waste disposal

The rapid evolution of electronic industry coupled with high product obsolescence leads to large volumes of electronic e-waste.  This is one of the fastest growing waste streams that pose a challenge for companies globally.

E-waste occupies expensive storage space, and leads to unnecessary real estate expenditure. Being a green company we are determined to follow environment friendly means of purging assets that have served their lifecycle. During the disposal process we also pay key focus on destroying secured data from all media.

Last month, the Labs IT India team successfully discarded Seven tons of e-waste from the IT store rooms. This comprised of assets such as damaged keyboards, mice, hard disk drives, cables, headsets, adaptors, optical media, projector lamps and batteries.

We facilitated this drive by identifying, segregating and validating the assets and working closely with teams concerned to get required approvals from government agencies. This time consuming process was essential to ensure that we were compliant with the local regulations.

The Global Procurement Organization was involved to support us in identifying and choosing certified e-waste disposal vendors. Four vendors were ascertained. The vendors visited our office to weigh and inspect the material. Although it was laborious to remove and restore items from and to the store, it was planned well and executed meticulously every time they arrived.  There were about 800 boxes of scrap to be examined each time. Tritech Systems was finally chosen as our vendor as they not only offered the best deal in terms of pricing but also assisted us in destroying data on media in our premises. The material was packed and shipped over two days with the assistance of Tritech systems.

Our stores are now clutter free, organized, providing additional space for installation & repair of laptops and we have been certified. 🙂
