Humanitarian Big Data Stories and TechTalks

In an effort to bring relevant and timely humanitarian big data stories to SAP TechEd&&Dcode in Las Vegas, our community reached out to the organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and invited Megan McGuire, an Epidemiologist in MSF’s eHealth Unit, to give a Tech Talk , a TED-styled new addition to the education sessions this year at SAP TechEd&&Dcode.

(TechTalk: Tuesday, October 21,  Veronese 2502, 3:00 - 3:45 p.m.)

“Ms. McGuire, with a strong focus in Public Health Informatics, has worked for over a decade in various projects throughout Asia, Africa and South America, of which five years were with Doctors Without Borders. She currently heads up the eHealth Unit which aims to provide timely and accurate information and monitoring for MSF projects in 26 countries. She has studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Johns Hopkins Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Drawing from her field experience and the new Unit, Megan will discuss how Doctors Without Borders is going “digital” and the difficulties of using electronic/digital applications for medical responses in remote, unstable, or resource-poor settings.  She will discuss the tension of
applying technology in appropriate settings and justification of why or why not going digital is in MSF’s future”

Community-driven Support of MSF

Many of our SCN community members are aware of the work of MSF and many support the organization through our Mission: I Care, I Gave, I Inspired.

But beyond the generous and much-needed charitable donations, wouldn’t it be wonderful if this community of technologists and analytic experts were to throw some of their considerable analytic and tech skills and talents at crisis situations that organizations such as MSF face?

The Data Geeks offer such an opportunity to the community to engage live this year at SAP TechEd&&Dcode in Las Vegas.

Data Geek sponsored Viz-a-Thon

Those lucky enough to get invited to the Data Geek sponsored Viz-a-Thon event on Tuesday evening, October 21st will have the opportunity to hear Megan McGuire talk about the work and challenges of centralizing Medical Data for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

The event invites community to:

Join us in helping solve real business challenges for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)in a fun filled evening event
with learning, prizes, and food. We’ll see who can create the best DataViz insights using SAP Lumira with MSF data. Come show us your DataViz skills by competing, or simply to learn some new tricks. Join us in this highly participatory event and help solve real business analytics challenges with Doctors Without Borders and our SAP Lumira Experts”

It’s no secret that we’ve made a tradition of hosting evening events with heart.

This year is no exception.
